Lakeside country living is a big draw for Central Florida's Placid Lakes
"Paradise Found" is a fitting motto for Placid Lakes. The unincorporated community is no exception to the area's hometown country feel, surrounded by shooting ranges and hunting preserves. Streets are marked by a dense thicket of native vegetation and freshwater canals echoing the calls of frogs and alligators. It is sandwiched between large lakes and sprawling nature conservation areas and only a few miles southwest of downtown Lake Placid. "A lot of people are drawn to that area that like nature and lakeside living," says Will Dibble, a Sebring resident and Broker at RE/MAX Realty Plus. Placid Lakes provides community amenities and projects, such as a brick installation around a lakefront flagpole in honor of residents who served in the Armed Services.

Placid Lakes properties consist of vacant lots and cul-de-sac properties along canals
A thicket of native Floridian scrub plants and tall pines line Placid Lakes' paved roads. Placid Lakes continues to creep in on the surrounding Lake Wales Ridge Wildlife and Environmental Areas. Dibble says it's not the only rural pockets of Lake Placid being bought up; recently closed citrus and caladium farms have also been acquired for new builds. Most properties on the market are quarter-acre vacant lots, and prices vary based on location. While plots start at around $12,500, those along canals and cul-de-sac streets can be priced as much as $100,000. Single-story homes offer one-car garages and open floor plans, 1,300 to 2,300 square feet of living space and a price range between $250,000 and $550,000. However, a few stately lakefront homes can encroach on the $700,000 to $1 million price range.

Downtown Lake Placid provides mural-adorned shops and restaurants
Within the heart of Placid Lakes is Casa Tequila Mexican Restaurant, an authentic Mexican spot known for its oversized plates and margaritas. Restaurants along the aptly named Lake June Road are Dock 633 and Jaxson's, home of the Hookiemelt: an interesting appetizer of gator or chicken covered in sour cream and wing sauce. Along US Highway 27 are most of the retail and chain restaurant options, and South Highlands Shopping Center is 6 miles away. Winn-Dixie and Dollar General are conveniently within 3 miles. Downtown buildings near Interlake Boulevard and Main Avenue showcase over 50 vibrant murals painted by local artists and house locally-owned boutiques and restaurants. Fresh local produce can be picked up at the Lake Placid Farmers Market on Saturday mornings near Morty & Edna's Craft Kitchen.
"Sebring and Lake Placid aren't known for big retail; we shop small most of the time," says Lisa Kneram, a Sebring resident and Broker with RE/MAX Realty Plus. Downtown Lake Placid was named “America’s Most Interesting Town” by Readers Digest Magazine, which comes as no surprise: the area is decorated by a large bronze bear, clown cutouts and hand-painted trash cans.
