About Lake Station, IN

About Lake Station, IN

Plenty of outdoor spaces with a familiar atmosphere

Once the location of the first train station in Lake County, Lake Station is a laidback city filled with winding waterways and parks. “It’s a small town where everyone knows everyone since people have been living there for a long time. You can’t go far without running into someone you know. A lot of people work at the mills nearby, but there are some people moving in from Illinois too since Indiana’s taxes are much lower,” says Kristina Vega, a Realtor with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate who grew up in Lake Station. Located 4 miles from Lake Michigan and about 40 miles from Chicago, Lake Station offers more affordable housing in a close-knit community.

Affordable ranches and bungalows on small lots

Lake Station hosts shaded gridded streets with homes that sit close together on small lots. “Homes are on the smaller side, and affordability is definitely a draw to the area,” Vega says. Most properties were built in the early to mid-20th century and appear in bungalow and ranch styles, though new construction is occasionally available. Homebuyers can find bungalows in need of renovation for as low as $50,000 to $70,000, though most bungalows cost between $130,000 and $190,000. Ranches usually cost between $170,000 and $250,000.

Go swimming, practice archery or go fishing at Riverview Park

Lake Station offers many natural spaces, the largest of which is Riverview Park. “The park has pickleball courts that a lot of people will come in from out-of-town to use,” Vega says. Offering an outdoor swimming pool, archery range, volleyball and basketball courts and a large green space by the river, the park is a hub for outdoor recreation. Locals can also fish from the shore or launch their watercraft at the boat launch. Additional boating and fishing opportunities can be found at Grand Boulevard Lake, which also hosts a one-mile lakeside nature loop for walking or biking. To go swimming or lounge on sandy shores, residents drive 4 miles north to the beaches along Lake Michigan.

Fresh fruit-flavored ice cream from Bajo Cero Michoacana

Central Avenue hosts Lake Station’s restaurants and local businesses, like auto repair shops. “Taqueria Mazamitla is where people will go for tacos. I don’t live in the [community] anymore, but I’ll still go back for Mazamitla,” Vega says. For dinner, locals can enjoy barbecue and seafood baskets from Tap House 1233 Grill and end the night with freshly made ice cream from Bajo Cero Michoacana. Or, they can gather friends for drinks at the He Ain't Here Lounge. The regional grocery store Strack and Van Til stocks groceries and household necessities, and those looking to go retail shopping can drive 9 miles to the Southlake Mall.
