The gem of Lake Worth Beach
Downtown Jewel is one of Lake Worth Beach’s most multifaceted communities, serving as the city’s historical, cultural and culinary heart. The neighborhood is named after the area's original moniker, Jewel, and encompasses the Old Town and Southeast Lucerne Historic Districts. These blocks are storied, with some properties dating back to 1912. More than a century later, historic buildings house lively shops, restaurants, galleries and museums along Lake and Lucerne avenues. Residents work hard to preserve coastal cottages from the 1920s, and an active neighborhood association plans well-attended events throughout the year, including an annual block party.
“The people here are very friendly,” says Todd Ketcham, neighborhood association president and Realtor with Coastline Realty. “You’ll see a lot of the same people as you’re walking your dogs or heading out to a restaurant. If you want to have that sense of community, this is the place to find it.” Ketcham says the neighborhood, which hosts an annual street painting festival, has also become a haven for local artists. Sculptures often grace the grounds of Lake Worth Beach Art Park. Many building facades feature bright murals, which Ketcham calls the area’s “hidden jewels.” Galleries like Lake Worth Art League display a rotating collection of multimedia art, while local troupes often perform at Lake Worth Playhouse, a historic 1920s Art Deco theater.

Lively restaurants on Lake Avenue
Most downtown restaurants are concentrated along Lake Avenue, where palm trees shade the sidewalk surrounding a colorfully decorated City Hall. Pelican Restaurant is a local favorite for its fusion brunch menu, combining classic American breakfast dishes with Indian flavors like vindaloo. “It’s one of those places that if you don’t get in early, you’re not going to get in because it’s just packed,” Ketcham says. Lilo’s Streetfood & Bar offers an eclectic sampling of international street foods, and an extensive wine list complements the elevated Italian fare at Paradiso Restaurant. Many eateries, including the popular fresh seafood joint Dave’s Last Resort, offer spacious sidewalk seating.
The energy of the avenues only ramps up in the evening, when locals head to nightlife staples like The Library — a speakeasy-style bar hidden behind Lilo’s — or classic pubs like The Irish Brigade. In 2024, Una Bakery was crowned the Best of Florida Winner in the category of International Bakeries by state tourist site Guide to Florida. The locally-owned bakery specializes in Eastern European bread, pastries and a fresh and creative brunch menu. Several small specialty markets are along South Dixie Highway, and Publix Super Market is a few blocks north of Lucerne Avenue.

Colorful, historic cottages worth repairing
As part of the Southeast Lucerne Historic District, the neighborhood includes a collection of cottages, bungalows and Mission Revival properties dating back to the 1920s Florida land boom. The compact, 25-foot lots showcase colorful wood frame vernacular homes, known locally as coastal cottages. Many sit close to the street with inviting porches covered by front-gabled roofs. “The people who get the cottages take care of them. They absolutely love them. Sometimes you’re very surprised, you see this quaint little house on the outside, and you walk inside, and it’s like stepping into the 21st century because everything is modernized,” Ketcham says. Any exterior changes, however, must be reviewed by the local architectural board.
Most historic cottages, generally smaller than 1,200 square feet, cost between $350,000 and $500,000. Slightly larger builds from the 1940s and 1950s can range from $400,000 to $600,000, and some sit on double lots and include accessory dwellings. A few condo complexes also dot the area closer to Lake and Lucerne avenues, offering one- and two-bedroom units for $110,000 to $380,000. Hurricanes are possible here, so flood insurance is highly recommended.

Florida's largest chalk art festival
For two days each February, Lake and Lucerne avenues are covered in a haze of colorful chalk dust during the Lake Worth Beach Street Painting Festival, an annual tradition since 1994 and now the largest in Florida. More than 600 artists converge on the neighborhood to cover the sidewalks with intricate chalk murals while local musicians and street performers serenade onlookers. In March, the Downtown Jewel Neighborhood Association hosts its annual “Flolfing” — that’s Florida golfing — tournament, a combination home tour and backyard golfing event where residents from surrounding communities can test their skills on themed, homemade courses. “We get approximately 350 people signed up for that every year. If we took everyone who wanted to come, we’d have over a thousand,” Ketcham says. “It’s very tongue-in-cheek in many ways. This last year, we had one of the hosts actually build a bubble machine and fill her backyard with bubbles. It’s a great time to come and hang out with friends you haven’t met yet.” Other city-wide events include the Great American Raft Race, a Fourth of July tradition featuring a parade, a hand-made raft race and an evening fireworks display at Bryant Park. Locals also look forward to the Lake Worth Beach Waterside Farmers Market every Saturday morning from October to May at Old Bridge Park.

Bryant Park borders the Lake Worth Lagoon
Downtown Jewel is less than a mile from the Lake Worth Lagoon, a section of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway that’s an essential brackish habitat for manatees, sea turtles, mangroves and reefs. Anglers can fish from the pier at Bryant Park, a lively waterfront green space with fields and paved trails extending down the coast. The southern end includes a large playscape and picnic areas, while the northern half centers on a covered bandshell and lawn for outdoor concerts. Boaters will find a convenient ramp and dock often used by the local Lake Worth Sailing Club. North of Lucerne Avenue, a peaceful boardwalk extends around the 118-acre Snook Islands Natural Area, a patch of coastal wetlands and mangroves with a kayak launch.
Lake Worth Beach Golf Club, established in 1926, has a public 18-hole course and the waterfront Beach Club restaurant. Lake Worth Beach Park, about a mile across the Lake Avenue bridge, offers more than 15 acres of sandy coastline, a nearly 1,000-foot pier and waterfront restaurants. John Prince Park covers more than 720 acres a few miles inland with campgrounds, pavilions, a golf learning center and hiking trails encircling a clear lake. An accessible waterside playground sits beside a collection of athletic courts and fields, accommodating everything from soccer to pickleball, and locals say the Lake Woof Dog Park is extremely popular.
