Life on the Lake Worth Lagoon
A peaceful mix of then and now, South Palm Park features historic homes, condo buildings, and new construction where people wake up to the sights of the Intracoastal Waterway. The neighborhood borders Lake Worth Lagoon, a sliver of the larger waterway home to native wildlife like dolphins, ospreys and sea turtles. One of South Palm Park’s defining features is a sprawling median spanning the length of the neighborhood. “It runs through South Palmway from 5th Avenue South to 18th Avenue South and is full of palm trees and lush, tropical greenery,” says Cheryl Rashkin, a South Palm Park resident and the former president of the South Palm Park Neighborhood Association. “It adds a nice aesthetic to the area.”
Waterfront parks and golf courses
Nature and recreation surround South Palm Park, including its namesake green space, which Rashkin calls a “small, passive park right on the Intracoastal Waterway,” featuring waterfront trails, spots for fishing and a playground. Locals also head there to relax beneath the shade of palm trees. “The neighborhood itself is also walkable,” says Rashkin. “People are always out walking their dogs or riding bikes, and people will come into our neighborhood to go for a walk along the median.” Roughly a mile north, Bryant Park has many of the same amenities as South Palm Park but has the added bonus of a boat launch for those looking to spend a day on the water. Additional views of the waterway can be found at the nearby Lake Worth Golf Club, which has a rich history in the area dating back to the 1920s. Golfers can play a round of 18 on the course lined by palm trees, water hazards and sand bunkers.

A mix of old and new homes in South Palm Park
Homeowners with private dock access will only have to step a few feet outside their back door to fish or kayak along the Lake Worth Lagoon. Home prices and styles here run the gamut, with one-bedroom, one-bathroom condos starting at $229,000 and five-bedroom waterfront estates reaching the $2.5 million mark. There are also several three-bedroom ranch homes selling for $750,000 to $815,000. Much of the neighborhood is part of Lake Worth Beach’s historic district, where houses were built during the Florida land boom of the 1920s, sharing the palm tree and sidewalk-lined streets with later midcentury models. While there is new construction being developed in the neighborhood, “a lot of it is being developed with details to fit in with the rest of the architecture,” says Don Todorich, a Realtor with The Corcoran Group. Those touches may include Spanish tile roofing and adobe exteriors.

Longstanding, active neighborhood association
South Palm Park is home to the oldest neighborhood association in Lake Worth Beach, and Rashkin says, “We meet at least once a month for some sort of social gathering.” Among them is what locals call ‘Full Moon,’ when neighbors bring food and drinks to the neighborhood park to share. The point of pride for South Palm Park, the lush and landscaped median in the center of South Palmway, gets decorated on the Saturday after Thanksgiving ahead of the Christmas holiday, and each block takes responsibility for its section of the grassy area. A neighborhood-wide yard sale coincides with the city’s Street Painting Festival, which is held in late February of each year. One of the most popular city events is the annual 4th of July raft parade, which ends with the Great American Raft Race, a Lake Worth Beach tradition for more than 20 years. The festivities wrap up at Bryant Park with live music and fireworks over the waterway.

Diverse eateries and lively taprooms
Local eateries with an international flair line Dixie Highway just west of the neighborhood. Le Bon Gout is known for its Haitian dishes, like oxtails and boiled plantains. Heading toward downtown Lake Worth Beach, locals stop by La Pitaya Mexican Restaurant, which prides itself on authentic dishes like gorditas and tacos wrapped in fresh, handmade tortillas. Less than 1.5 miles north, Mathews Brewing Company exudes an industrial feel. The open-air floor plan lets customers see the entire brewing facility and watch as beers and ales are made. The local hot spot also has live music, trivia nights and food trucks. Locals can head downtown to find a Publix Super Market for grocery essentials.
