1950s suburbia continues to thrive outside of Denver
Seven miles from Denver within the larger suburb of Lakewood is a neighborhood known as Lasley, where Rocky Mountain peaks offer the constant promise of hiking trails to the west. After World War II came to an end in the mid-1940s, thousands of veterans and their families flocked to the Denver area. Jefferson County, in particular, grew over 80% between 1940 and 1950, and single-family brick homes sprung up en masse across Lasley. Remnants of an idealized suburban existence still remain in the neighborhood, even 70 years later. “A lot of people have lived there for a long, long time, but it’s also started to change a lot in recent years,” says Lisa Nguyen, a Colorado native, Lakewood local and Realtor with RE/MAX. Investors and first-time buyers have put down roots in the neighborhood, and families with young children appreciate the proximity of Lasley Elementary, which is within walking distance for many. Ultimately, the neighborhood’s main appeal is its location — “It’s far enough west that you can make it to the mountains very quickly and you can also get into downtown,” says Nguyen.
Not far from Lasley is the Mile High City, which offers an ever-evolving calendar of events.

Brick ranch-styles, split levels and subdivisions
In Lasley, prospective buyers will find mostly brick ranch-styles dating back to the 1950s and ''70s-era split levels. Lot sizes are relatively compact, and 2,000-square-foot homes hover between $450,000 and $600,000. Many have single-car attached garages, and some homeowners have even taken advantage of the Colorado sun by installing solar panels. Streets are quiet, and neighborhood kids shoot hoops in cul-de-sacs or short driveways. South of Florida Avenue, buyers will find 2000s-era subdivisions like Emerald Estates. Here, single-family contemporary homes can sell for upwards of $700,000 and HOA fees cover landscaping and external home maintenance.

Along Mississippi Avenue, find Brockmeyer’s, a coffee shop that serves Bavarian pretzels and sticky buns under a “Big Top” circus-style tent. Over 80 retail options can be found in Belmar, where Nguyeng says most residents like to do their shopping. There’s a Target, Whole Foods and Dick’s Sporting Goods, along with sit-down restaurants like Tstreet.
