Nestled between two golf courses and lakes
Just west of Crystal Lake, Village of Lakewood homes back two golf courses—Turnberry Golf Club and Red Tail Golf Club. Residents can walk from their backdoors onto the acres of green, but lakes within the neighborhood also offer additional recreational opportunities and peaceful vistas. Village of Lakewood provides a quiet escape, but downtown Crystal Lake isn’t far, offering events at a historic mansion and local restaurants.
Golfing at Turnberry and Red Tail golf clubs
On the northern side of the neighborhood, Turnberry Golf Club’s green stretches across 166 acres. Members can practice their swing on the course or the driving range, and groups can also play tennis together. To the south, Red Tail Golf Club features a 240-acre course and offers a mix of leagues for kids, women and seniors. While the village has a few scenic lakes, waterborne recreation is a short drive away. “At Crystal Lake, we have beautiful public beaches where people can swim,” says broker Mandy Montford with Baird and Warner. “But there’s also boat launches when people want to go fishing.” Crystal Lake has two beaches — Main Beach and West Beach. The latter is closer to Village of Lakewood, offering a sandy beach and a playground overlooking the water.
Village of Lakewood's single-family homes and townhomes
Multiple subdivisions occupy Village of Lakewood’s winding streets, lined with large contemporary homes with colonial influences built in the late 90s and early 2000s. Homes can sit on a half acre to over an acre of land, with landscaped front gardens and lawns marked by lawnmower lines. Maples grow in front yards, dropping red leaves in the fall. Communities like Falcon Greens and The Highlands at Red Tail offer New Traditional townhomes and condos. “It’s a little bit of an affluent area with some luxury houses. People have built their own specs, and the lots are really nice,” says real estate agent Vanessa Thomfohrda with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Starck Realty. Townhomes and condos typically sell between $275,000 and $400,000, while single-family homes range between $450,000 and $750,000. However, those looking to build their own homes can find a small selection of plots selling between $25,000 and $50,000. The community also receives a 1 for its overall CAP Index Crime Score, which is lower than the national average of 4.
Crystal Lake's farmers market hosted at The Dole
Along Crystal Lake, The Dole is a historic Victorian Italianate mansion turned into an event venue. While people can reserve it for private events, the city also uses it for their community events. From May to October, the Farmers Market+ At The Dole takes place in the lawn in front of the mansion on Sunday mornings, with live music setting the backdrop as people explore the produce, baked goods and artisan goods. For November through April, the market actually moves inside the house, so people can continue to shop local. “We just had our festival of lights, which is always right after Thanksgiving and something that people really look forward to every year,” Montford says.
Nearby bakeries and downtown restaurants
Right on the opposite side of Ackman Road from Village of Lakewood, Konrad’s Bakery bakes cookies, tarts, muffins, pies and strudels fresh each day. People can also order special cakes and pastries for catered events. People can order Chicago deep-dish pizza from Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria, which is housed in a barn. A tractor out in front of the silo adds to the rustic, rural feel. 1776 Restaurant offers a more fine-dining experience with white tablecloths and small flower centerpieces. The menu features lots of seafood dishes, like halibut, mussels, and salmon. Mariano’s supermarket is about 4 miles away. Also about 4 miles away, The Commons of Crystal Lake has a Jewel-Osco and KD Market.
Two elementary schools for Village of Lakewood students
Students living east of Haligus Road can attend West Elementary School, which earns an A-minus from Niche. Meanwhile, the western side of the neighborhood can attend South Elementary School, which gets a B-plus rating. Both elementary schools feed into Richard Bernotas Middle School, which also earns a B-plus ranking. A-rated Crystal Lake Central High School offers programs where students can earn skills for specific industries, including engineering, computer science, education, fashion and culinary arts.
Driving around the Crystal Lake area
Without buses or bike lanes, Village of Lakewood residents will likely need their cars to get around the area. Downtown Crystal Lake is about 4.5 miles away, connected to Village of Lakewood by Dole Avenue. The Crystal Lake Metra station is also here, linking residents with downtown Chicago, about 54 miles south. Northwestern Medicine Huntly Hospital has the closest emergency room, about 5 miles away. When traveling farther away, Chicago O’Hare International Airport is about 44 miles from Village of Lakewood.
