An established community in Lancaster
About 3 miles north of Downtown Lancaster's Historic District, Bloomingdale features a mix of single-family homes, duplexes and apartments scattered along tree-lined streets. "Bloomingdale is one of the best places to live in Manheim Township," says Susan Allison, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway who has called Bloomingdale home for 25 years. "I can't say enough about it. It's quiet and peaceful, and the neighbors are very friendly."
Established 20th-century neighborhoods blend in with new developments, while new families continue to move in for its highly rated school district. Yet the essence of Lancaster County remains the same. Tucked within the heart of the Amish country, a 3-mile drive north leads to acres of farmland, locally owned markets and roadside stands, offering residents a blend of city living, suburban convenience and rural tranquility within a 10-mile radius.
STEM programs for high schoolers
The Manheim Township School District serves the community and earns an A rating from Niche. , which Niche also ranks it as the best school district in the Lancaster area. Primary school students are divided between two A-rated schools: Nitrauer Elementary for kindergarten through fourth grade and Landis Run Intermediate for fifth and sixth grade. Students may then attend Manheim Township Middle School, which scores an A-minus, and Manheim Township High School, which earns an A. In addition to Advanced Placement courses, twelfth graders can pursue technical educational training through the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center, rated one of Forbes's top 30 trade schools. Bloomingdale is also home to Lancaster Bible College, a. This private non-denominational Bible college that offers undergraduate, graduate and seminary degrees.
20th and 21st century homes
Residential streets branch off of Oregon Pike and feature multiple apartment complexes, a handful of duplexes and a collection of single-family homes. Winding roads give way to 20th-century bi-levels, split-levels and colonial- and ranch-style homes on roomy lots. Prices for these properties can range from the $300,000s to the $600,000s. Massive white oak trees offer some residents privacy, while other homes showcase their grassy landscaped front yards. One- to two-car garages and fenced-in backyards are standard. Some newer developments boast sidewalks, but quiet roads make it possible to stroll around in those areas without sidewalks. "It's a beautiful place to get out of the house," Allison says. "People are always walking around and riding bikes." Newer subdivisions feature uniform 21st-century New Traditionals that sit close together and range in price from the mid $400,000s to the $700,000s. Other streets give way to contemporary single-family homes on spacious lots priced from the $700,000s to the $900,000s.
Bloomingdale's green spaces
Lancaster Municipal Park anchors the neighborhood. In addition to a few township offices, this open green space features multiple soccer fields, baseball fields, a basketball court and a small playground. About 2 miles north, Landis Woods Park offers 70 acres of wooded trails, making it one of Manheim's largest tracts of undeveloped land. "The trails are like a hidden jewel," Allison says.
Overlook Park, the township's community hub, spans nearly 140 acres. Located about 3 miles from the heart of Bloomingdale, paved walkways meander past several sports fields, a disc golf course and a bocce ball court. An 18-hole golf course is open to the public seven days a week. Others can practice their swing at the driving range or play a game of mini golf at Pelvo's Putt Putt. Furry friends can run free at the members-only dog park, while additional amenities include an outdoor community pool, an indoor roller rink and a sprawling playground.
National retailers and local shops
Along Oregon Pike, Worthington is a new planned community where residential streets surround the Shoppes at Township Square. The square is home to a spa, a cycle studio and a handful of restaurants. Allison says her favorite is Gibraltar, an upscale Mediterranean restaurant with seafood specialties like tuna tartare and grilled Spanish octopus. Next door, Salt & Pepper Italian Bistro Pizza offers a casual atmosphere with classic subs, pasta and gourmet pizzas. Salt & Pepper also offers a bring-your-own-beverage policy with no corkage fee.
Dozens of big-box stores are located south of U.S. Route 30, along with Park City Center, an indoor shopping mall with over 150 retailers and restaurants. National grocers range from Giant and Aldi to Whole Foods Market and Wegmans. However, in the heart of the Amish country, many residents opt to shop local. "That's the beauty of Bloomingdale," Allison says. "You can drive five minutes south to any store you could possibly need or five minutes north to an Amish fruit and vegetable stand."
About 3 miles north, The Market at Oregon Dairy is a popular family-owned farm and market. There's also a restaurant, an ice cream parlor and a gift shop. Like many surrounding farms, Oregon Dairy features a corn maze and pumpkin patch in the fall. In the winter, residents can admire over 15,000 sparkling holiday lights, take photos with Santa or warm up by a campfire in the fields. Family farm days take place in the summer, while a petting zoo and playground offer year-round entertainment. With Downtown Lancaster 3 miles south, residents also have their pick of seasonal events like Celebrate Lancaster, which marks summer's arrival with live music, food trucks and dancing in the street.
3 miles to downtown
The Red Rose Transit Authority operates bus routes throughout the community. However, most residents rely on personal vehicles to get around. New York State Route 272, or Oregon Pike, runs through Bloomingdale and leads residents about 3 miles south to Downtown Lancaster's Amtrak Station and the Lancaster General Hospital. Harrisburg International Airport is less than 35 miles west via U.S. Route 30, while U.S. Route 222 is nearby.
