A river-crossing community
The Bridgeport neighborhood in eastern Lancaster County is a scenic, thriving little community encompassing shopping areas, subdivisions, farmland and parkland. Drive just a couple of miles west, and residents can be in downtown Lancaster, while dairy farms and cornfields line the roads just a few miles east of the neighborhood. The area’s history began in 19th century when farmers and traders would cross the Conestoga River to sell their produce and wares. The area was a well-traveled crossroads and staging point for crossing the river, hence the name Bridgeport. It still serves as a crossroads, allowing residents close proximity to the city without all the hustle and bustle. “Bridgeport is a nice, quiet little community close to the Conestoga River,” says Realtor Matt Helsel with Iron Valley Real Estate. “The neighborhood is on the outskirts of Lancaster City, but it’s still inside the Route 30 Bypass, which makes it convenient for commuters to Lancaster, Philadelphia and Baltimore.” The presence of St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital on Lincoln Avenue helps strengthen Bridgeport’s family-friendly reputation. Bridgeport rates a 3 out of 10 on the CAP Index crime score, lower than the national average of 4 out of 10.

Bridgeport’s homes are in demand
The housing market is tight. “Right now, there aren’t many homes for sale, and when they become available, they tend to sell immediately,” says Helsel. Most homes in Bridgeport are found on quiet, residential roads in subdivisions. Homes sit back from the streets behind well-tended lawns. Brick and stone ranch-style homes built during the 1950s and 1960s are common. Newer homes that were built during the 21st century include townhouses and colonials. Prospective homeowners can expect to pay between $300,000 and $485,000 for a three-bedroom colonial home. A three-bedroom townhouse in Bridgeport typically sells for between $340,000 and $401,000.
