A gracious neighborhood
At the center of West Lancaster is the gracious Wheatland, home of President James Buchanan before he moved to the White House in the mid-1800s. While his red-brick estate surrounded by trees is now a museum, many of the stately houses in the area around Wheatland still retain their original beauty even after generations of college professors, entrepreneurs and community leaders have raised families in them. In addition to a residential area of comfortable homes, this leafy suburban neighborhood is also home to a busy area of museums, a local college, parks and shops.

Homes historic and humble
South of Columbia Avenue, near small neighborhood park playgrounds and a supermarket, are modest but comfortable townhouses, semi-detached twins and single-family homes with 1,200 to 2,000 square feet of living space. These homes usually range between $315,000 to $700,000. On the other side of the avenue, near the Wheatland estate and Franklin & Marshall College’s picturesque campus are older, more imposing homes on manicured lawns set well back from quiet tree-lined residential streets. Most of these sprawling mansions were built between the late 1800s and early 1900s, including Tudors, Victorians and colonials. Home buyers can expect to pay between $500,000 to $1 million for one of these homes. “There are so many beautiful homes with wonderful landscaping. And there is a lot of history there,” says Christine Nolt, a Lancaster County native and partner in Kingsway Realty with the Nolt & Bailey Team. “Those properties sell very well. They don’t last long in that neighborhood.”

Places to play inside and outside
West Lancaster is loaded with things to do and places to go. Nearby Buchanan Park is a 22-acre gem across the street from Franklin & Marshall College. This green park offers open spaces for playing, picnicking or reading. A botanical garden and inviting benches surround memorials to the 15th president. Children flock to the park’s famous sledding hill when it snows to enjoy some downhill fun. The Conestoga House was built in the 1700s as tavern that serviced the Conestoga wagon trade. In the 1900s, it was purchased as a private estate and extensively remodeled and updated. Today, the 12-bedroom house and its 8-acres of gardens are open for tours. Those who enjoy spine-tingling frights will want to check out the nearby Field of Screams adventure area. For 32 years, the theme park has thrilled visitors with a haunted mansion, haunted hayrides and mansions and a haunted woodland. The North Museum of Nature and Science satisfies intellectual curiosity with its interactive events, rotating exhibits and collection of historical artifacts, taxidermized birds, ancient fossils, colorful minerals and more.
