Smaller neighborhood with convenient amenities
Sitting in the northern section of Laredo, Crown Ridge is a smaller communities 7 miles north of downtown Laredo. In addition to newer homes and proximity to locally owned restaurants, Crown Ridge also has access to a highly-rated school system. “New subdivisions are going up,” says Joe Baeza, who has lived in Laredo most of his adult life and is an investigator and public information officer for the city of Laredo. “Laredo is surrounded by a lot of rural community. There’s a lot of places for growth.” Crown Ridge is one of the last residential sections in Laredo before the town transitions to warehouses and then ranching land. “Good schools are a big deal,” says Baeza. “It’s bragging rights for a lot of neighborhoods.” Crown Ridge is part of the United Independent School District, which earns a B-plus from Niche.

Large homes in the northern section of Laredo
The houses of Crown Ridge are hidden behind Shiloh Drive and its commercial businesses. The neighborhood was primarily built in the 1990s, with New Traditional and Spanish styles lining the streets. Prices range from $285,000 to $550,000. Homes are larger, although they have smaller lots and sit closer together. “HVAC systems are a necessity and there are pools,” says Baeza. “We’re probably the hottest community in Texas.” There are fences around the property, although those who do not have fences often have security bars in the front entryway. There are some apartment buildings and townhomes on Shiloh Drive. Los Encinos Townhomes sell for about $275,000 and are part of a homeowners association.

Birthday celebrations, concerts and fishing
The Washington Birthday Celebration takes over the month of February, with multiple events including an endcap week with an airshow, two parades and a jalapeño festival. “Unless you’re from here, it’s kind of hard to understand where it came from. It’s kind of like, why?” says Baeza. “But it’s been that way for as long as we can remember.” At Lake Casa Blanca, about 8 miles east, the annual fishing derby is a free event for children ages 6 to 15. The Concert in Park features guest bands and food trucks.
Growing school district and highly rated schools
Students begin at Matias De Llano Elementary for kindergarten through fifth grade before moving to Trautmann Middle for sixth through eighth grade. Both schools earn a B from Niche. John B. Alexander High School earns an A-minus from Niche and offers Advanced Placement courses, a magnet program for health science and four fine arts programs. “United Independent School District is growing pretty quickly,” says Baeza. “There’s a lot of 9th-grade campuses. They have the same name, but still have room to grow.”
