A small Laredo neighborhood with a big spirit
Two miles from the Texas/Mexico border and northeast of downtown Laredo, Las Cruces is a quaint urban neighborhood with a big spirit. Mom and pops fill this community, and its proximity to Interstate 35 allows residents to easily access all of the diverse dining, shopping and attractions that South Texas has to offer. “It’s walkable, but it’s a small community; everything is really close,” says Joey Ferguson, Realtor for NAI Swisher & Martin Realty, whose focus is on commercial but has served the Laredo area for over 20 years.

Family-owned shops and restaurants define Las Cruces
Family-owned markets, restaurants, and businesses define Las Cruces. Locals can get fresh tortillas to make meals at home at Los Dos Laredos Tortilla Factory, handmade dresses from Mom’s, bouquets and gifts from Adela’s Floras and Creations and pottery from Gonzalez Ceramics. Barbecue purists can get their fix at Cotulla’s BBQ, a bright red, no-frills joint attached to a tire shop, known for its barbacoa, stewy guisado tacos and “mariachis,” what locals call soft tacos. Bolillos Café Central is also a popular morning and lunch spot, known for its café con leche, tortas, pan dulce and bolillos, their specialty, a savory bread made throughout Central America. While sushi, tacos and ceviche may sound like an odd combination, locals rave about the three dishes served at neighborhood restaurant Taco Kissi. Open early, serving breakfast tacos and for lunch, where $2 carne asada tacos and $10 tempura rolls are the favorites and late-night after midnight, where locals coast through the drive-thru to snag their birria taco cravings.
Locally owned markets are also sprinkled throughout Las Cruces. Mex-Mart is along East Saunders Street and provides meat, snacks, and other basics, along with a counter selling tacos and a salsa bar. Butcher shop Pronto’s Meat Market provides a variety of different cuts, along with spices and produce. In and Out Groceries provides essentials, along with homemade soups, snacks and the go-to spot for locally made chicharrónes. For a wider selection, residents have grocery store H-E-B and Sam’s Club 2 miles north of the community off Interstate 35. For more shopping, residents can reach Plaza De Laredo in 3 miles, which offers Walmart, Dollar Tree, Home Depot and Academy Sports and Outdoors.
Or, for more local flavor, residents are 1 mile east of the vibrant San Bernardo Historic District off I-35. “San Bernardo Avenue is known for its Mexican crafts,” says Ana Reyna Arzate, Marketing Coordinator for Laredo Convention and Visitors Bureau and 20-year Laredo resident. “Whatever you can imagine, you can find on this avenue. It's easy to get to, very walkable, and space for bicycles as well.” The 40-block shopping district is the largest collection of authentic goods from Mexico, with local merchants selling everything from jewelry to artwork, clothing and candies. “My favorites are Basket and Pottery Alley, which sells plates and decorations,” she says. “Charro Mexican Imports is also good’ they sell interiors and clay pots.” The district is also known for its locally owned restaurants, mainly taquerias, Tex-Mex food trucks and sit-down Latin American restaurants.

Spanish-style homes for under $300,000
Las Cruces’ narrow grid streets are lined with Texas-Mexican vernacular architecture styles, stone cottages, mission-style homes and other properties with Spanish influences, primarily built in the early 1980s. Homebuyers can expect two-bedroom homes that are around 1,300 square feet for approximately $100,000 up to four- and five-bedroom homes that are over 2,000 square feet for around $270,000. While few sidewalks exist, residents enjoy carports, spacious paved driveways and fenced-in yards. “it’s more of a redevelopment area, but the city has been working a lot to redevelop it,” Ferguson says. “New construction is a big deal, but land is scarce, so right now, there are only around six homes for sale.”

Community green space and a 22-acre linear park
Residents are surrounded by opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. At Ramos Park, residents can enjoy a picnic or let the kids play. Juan Jose “Johnny” Rendon Park sits at the neighborhood's northwest corner. The park offers a skatepark, basketball courts, a playground and walking trails. Located along the 10-mile Zacate Creek, which connects the entire city to the Rio Grande, residents can easily access the surrounding 22-acre greenbelt and several other parks and trails. Traveling south from Rendon Park, residents can enjoy picturesque views and end up at Dr. Cecila May Moreno Park and Lyon Skate Park off Jefferson Street. The park offers bike paths, a playground and basketball hoops.
The Zacate Creek greenbelt received $7.6 million in April 2024 for a complete overhaul. The funding came through a grant from the Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership Program. The City of Laredo and Webb County covered part of the funding. The proposed Zacate Creek District Corridor will include new trails, an open-air visitor center and places to rent kayaks and bikes. Additional bridges, bike repair stations, a community garden and picnic tables will also be added. The Inner City Pool in the southwest corner of Las Cruces offers a respite from the Texas heat in the summer. For more outdoor fun, residents can reach Lake Casa Bianca State International State Park in 4 miles, a hot spot for swimming, boating and fishing.

Celebrating birds and Mexican heritage
The city puts on various events that residents can easily access, including the Laredo Birding Festival, an annual tradition held every February. As a major path for migratory birds in the warmer months, birdwatching tends to be a popular hobby here. One of the city’s most popular events is the Laredo International Sister Cities Festival, held every July. The three-day celebration transforms the Sames Auto Arena into an indoor Mercado with artisans from Mexico selling various hand-made jewelry, clothing, food and other items. “It’s very popular. We celebrated 20 years of the festival this past July,” says Arzate. “We have 200 booths operated by coming from Mexico and Latin America to sell their products. We have food and cultural entertainment from Mexico, and this year, we had 20,0000 people attend over the three days.”
Three miles from downtown Laredo
Highway 59 runs through the neighborhood, and Interstate 35 is 2 miles west of Las Cruces, making getting around the area a breeze. Residents can reach downtown Laredo in 3 miles, Laredo International Airport in 4 miles, and Laredo Medical Center is directly east of the community. Public transportation is also convenient via El Metro Transit, with bus stops scattered throughout the neighborhood, but predominantly along McPherson Road and East Saunders Street.
