The neighborhood surrounds the country club and golf course

Almost 8 miles north of downtown Laredo, the neighborhood of Plantation consists mostly of the Laredo Country Club and its 18-hole course. “Things are booming here,” says Maria Calderon-Porter, a resident of Laredo. “We’re like a big city, but we’re not.” Laredo has continued to spread north, with new subdivisions stretching the reach of the city. New jobs are also being created. Residents often move in to open a business. “When it comes to supporting the dramatic pace of consumerism,” says Calderon-Porter, “the support is there.” Plantation is within 5 miles of several shopping centers and the city is continually building new commercial areas north of the neighborhood. The Country Club, once on the edge of Laredo, has now been encompassed by the neighborhood, as homes and subdivisions were built surrounding the golf course.

Spanish Colonial homes overlooking the golf course

The neighborhood contains New Traditional, Spanish Colonial and contemporary homes, although Spanish Colonial is by far the most common, followed by contemporary and then New Traditional. New Traditional homes range in price from $365,000 to $500,000, with contemporaries and Spanish Colonials ranging from around $400,000 to $1.5 million. Homeowners associations are present throughout the neighborhood, as are gated communities, but these two aspects do not define the neighborhood. Similarly, pools are common but are not present in every home. Houses have attached garages and street parking is rare. While sidewalks occasionally appear throughout Plantation, they often follow only one side of the street. Homes are larger, but tend to be closer together and have mature trees covering sections of the yard. There are many homes whose backyards overlook the golf course.

To the south, Colonel Santos Benavides Elementary receives a B from Niche, while United Middle earns a B-plus. All students then attend J.B. Alexander High School, which is rated an A-minus. Variety of chain and local restaurants from around the world

At the intersection of East Del Mar Boulevard and McPherson Road are a variety of chain and local restaurants and stores such as H-E-B grocery store. Going south along McPherson Road showcases Cosmos Bar & Grill, Hokkaido sushi and Danny’s Restaurant, serving Mexican dishes in an informal setting. “We have a plethora of Mexican restaurants, all very good,” says Calderon-Porter. “It’s not just Mexican, but Cuban, Korean, Chinese -- the world is here in terms of culinary.” The Laredo Country Club has several dining options, including the more casual The 19th Hole with drinks and appetizers. The Magnolia Bar and Grille is a sit-down restaurant, with a variety of dining options including grilled octopus and matamoros tacos.
