Large residential neighborhood with access to public services
Santo Nino sits along the Rio Grande, 3 miles from downtown Laredo. The neighborhood follows the grid-like planning of much of the city, with residences filling its 22 blocks. A smattering of local stores and restaurants are along U.S. Highway 83, which runs along the west side of Santo Nino. “We have lot-lined homes, patio homes," says Maria Calderón-Porter, a longtime Laredoan who works in the area. She also brings up that there is a range of housing pricing. Santo Nino also has four elementary schools--including the highly rated J.A. Kawas Elementary--a middle school and a high school within its boundaries. It's also home to the Doctors Hospital Emergency Room South, the Cigarroa Recreation Center and the Sophie Christen McKendrick, Francisco Ochoa and Fernando A. Salinas Branch Library.
