A classic neighborhood enshrined in old American culture
In the mind of American poet Walt Whitman, Laurel Springs was one of the greatest places to visit near his home in Camden, calling the waters that flow through the community “the prettiest lake in either America or Europe.”
More than a century after Whitman lived his final years in the area, Laurel Springs has become a largely residential suburb in South New Jersey. Save for a small commercial area around the historic East Atlantic Avenue rail and road corridor, Laurel Springs is a predominately residential area, stretching more than 10 miles from Camden and Philadelphia. Despite its seemingly homogenous character, arranged in the typical traditional block grid in the sprawling New Jersey suburbs outside Philly, Laurel Springs has its unique traits. “It’s almost like no two homes are identical,” says Kenneth Weidler, a broker associate at BHHS Fox & Roach, describing the varied home architecture throughout the community. Though times have changed since America’s song inspired the iconic transcendental poet, the area still maintains its ties to Whitman and the natural beauty of Laurel Lake.

Myriad Victorian and 20th century homes
Searching for homes in Laurel Springs, prospective homebuyers can find large foursquare Colonials with a full porch next to stucco-clad craftsman bungalows. Many of the neighborhood’s homes highlight classical late 1800s and early 1900s architecture, including Victorian features like turrets, bay windows and wraparound porches with ornate finishes. In this more suburban setting, towering evergreens, maples, oaks and sycamores shade homes and keep people cool as they stroll to neighbors’ homes or the spots where Whitman bathed in Laurel Lake. Housing here is generally more expensive than other parts of Camden County. The median home price is $290,000, compared to neighboring Lindenwold and Clementon where the medians hover around $150,000.

A close-knit community at Laurel Springs School
Laurel Springs School is a tiny elementary school with an 11 to 1 student-teacher ratio and an A-minus rating from Niche. The K-6 grade school is over 100 years old, and with fewer than 200 students, it’s easy for classmates and parents to bond as they walk to school daily and meet for weekend playdates “It’s three blocks away from everybody,” Weidler says. From there, students can advance to the public Samuel S. Yellin Schools for middle school and Sterling High School. Niche gives the secondary schools a C-plus and B, respectively.

Historic parks and sites tied to Walt Whitman
You can connect with more Whitman history through Laurel Springs’ two historic sites. Take a meditative nature bath on Whitman Walk at Crystal Springs along the southern side of Laurel Springs. A simple wooden boardwalk features Whitman’s poetry carved directly into it and guides you through the wetlands. Nearby, people can visit the restored Georgian-style home where Whitman summered, the Whitman Stafford House, which is open for tours and occasional free concerts in the backyard. On the other side of the community to the north, residents gather and bring their children to the Laurel Springs Recreation Complex to play baseball, tennis, soccer and other sports on its fields and courts. Here and at Saratoga Park at the western end of the community, parents bring their children to enjoy the community’s playgrounds.

Casual dining and sweets in downtown Laurel Springs
Laurel Spring’s downtown section encompasses storefronts along Atlantic Avenue between the old train station and the Laurel Springs Borough Hall, located inside an old Victorian stone mansion that sits in the center of town. Try your hand at crafting at The Makers Workshop, an artists’ studio space that offers workshops and ceramic parties. Stop in at Bella Vita Pizza, where Weidler recommends the wings. The Original Banana Company serves frozen chocolate-dipped and candy-coated bananas and pineapples with every topping under the sun. Order the shop’s signature UFO—a flying-disc-shaped ice cream sandwich made from banana bread.

Holiday parades and the annual WaltFest
Living in Laurel Springs, residents take part in neighborhood yard sales and annual events such as the holiday tree lighting and the July 4th parade. On Laurel Springs Day each year, the small downtown area around Atlantic Avenue closes for vendors, live music and merrymaking. But WaltFest is the must-attend event of the year, held each May to celebrate Whitman’s birthday. At WaltFest, guests can trip back to 1876 and hear poetry from a white-bearded Whitman reenactor or learn about life in a Civil War encampment from live reenactors.
Traveling and commuting by NJ Transit bus and PATCO trains
Despite its distance from Philadelphia and more urban sections of Camden, Laurel Springs residents can quickly reach Center City and other destinations in the region via NJ Transit buses and PATCO trains. Buses route through the neighborhood along Laurel Road, one of the area's prominent thoroughfares, while commuters catch the train at the nearby Lindenwold station, which features a large park-and-ride lot.

I have lived here for a year and am very happy. It's a walkable town and the neighbors are nice. Practically everyone owns a dog or jogs so you run into neighbors easily. The public school is very good and my son has had great experiences there. I wish the center of town was more developed but that may be in the near future. It's a hidden gem with homes of all types which is nice. It has a small town feel in the best way with close access to shopping and Philly nightlife. It has lots of access to major roads for commuters and has a train station a five minute drive away.
