A welcoming community in the city of Lawrence
Partially outlined by the Spicket River, Arlington is a residential district in Lawrence that is bordered by Methuen to the north. Echoing the characters of a city plot, Arlington has mostly linear streets on a slightly hilly landscape. Residential houses sit close together, and many area restaurants and markets are within walking distance. In addition to having a mix of Victorian-era triple-deckers and businesses on main thoroughfares, Arlington is surrounded by big-box stores and staple shopping places like La Fruteria and the Lawrence Flea Market. The community is about 1 mile away from the Merrimack River’s waterfront area, which is teaming with local Dominican and Spanish restaurants, breweries and bakeries. “Lawrence is a city of immigrants, and over 50% of the people here are Dominican,” says local Realtor Penelope Valdez Mejia with Keller Williams. “The people here are very friendly, and there is lots of diversity in the community.”
Multi-family homes dominate the landscape
Arlington is mainly comprised of multi-family properties built in the early 20th century, but some can date back to the late 1800s. Triple-deckers with rounded facades or pillared balconies and multi-family homes crowd the narrow streets that are lined with sidewalks. These multi-unit dwellings often go from $650,000 to just over $1 million. Occasionally, colonial-inspired single-family homes and Workers Cottages are also spotted between $350,000 and $500,000. Yard sizes are typical of urban plots and are on the smaller side, usually about 3,000 to 5,000 square feet. Townhouses and duplexes can be around $300,000 to $400,000. “Arlington has more multi-family homes,” Mejia says. “It’s a very convenient location with many independent markets, shops and highways.”
