Historic neighborhood that maintains its charm
Well-maintained historic homes line heavily-trafficked, cracked roads in West Leominster. “Merriam Avenue is one of my favorite streets in the city because it has so many beautiful historic homes that have held onto the character of the neighborhood,” says Sherri Tammelin Rogers, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty who lived in Leominster for 28 years. “Back in the day, I’d imagine that’s where the prominent families resided, and it shows so well.” Homes aren’t the only historic relics in West Leominster. Residents can learn about figureheads of the antislavery movement or meander through gardens once owned by heavyweights of the plastics industry, all without leaving the neighborhood. Plus, the neighborhood offers proximity to everyday amenities, businesses and a commuter rail leading to Boston. “There’s something for everyone in Leominster,” says Brenda Cormier, a local Realtor with Re/Max vision who grew up in the city. “There’s so much to do; the town is so versatile.”
Classic New England homes
Homes in West Leominster embody classic New England styles. Colonial Revivals, gable fronts, ranch styles and Victorians, many of which were built in the early to mid-1900s, sit on tree-lined Merriam Avenue and nearby streets. In this hilly area, many residential roads are worn with cracks and bumps. “There’s housing for everyone,” Cormier says. “The market spans many price ranges, and there are all kinds of existing homes that homebuyers can put their own mark on or that are move-in ready.” For between $290,000 and $400,000, potential homebuyers can find small Cape Cods or historic properties that may need updating. Two-story houses in classic styles range from $400,000 to $600,000, while four- to five-bedroom properties over 2,000 square feet can cost between $600,000 and $975,000.
Learning Leominster history at neighborhood parks
West Leominster’s outdoor spaces preserve the area’s history. The Doyles, a family of plastic moguls, once owned 157-acre Doyle Community Park. It was gifted to The Trustees of Reservations, a Massachusetts preservation and conservation nonprofit, after their death. The park features wheelchair-accessible trails, gardens and grassy open space great for picnicking, tossing a ball around or just relaxing outdoors. Nearby Barrett Park has playground equipment, hiking trails, sports fields and a pond near scattered picnic tables. Dedicated hikers can also explore the nearby Nashua Valley Conservation Area, where visitors can stick to a short 2-mile loop or get ambitious with longer, 8-mile expeditions.
The Frances H. and Jonathan Drake House, located on Franklin Street at the southern end of the neighborhood, tells the history of the abolitionists who once lived there. The Drakes harbored escaped enslaved people in their Leominster home as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Frances Drake claimed that she assisted several people escaping enslavement for over 25 years, including Frederick Douglass and William Lloyd Garrison. Residents who want to learn more about the city, curl up with a good book or attend a small community gathering can also go to the Leominster Public Library in the neighborhood.
Main Street eats from burgers to vegan carbonara
Leominster’s Main Street spans the neighborhood's eastern border. “Downtown, we really have a great collection of restaurants with all kinds of flavors brought by different chefs,” Cormier says. Spots like The Fix Burger Bar, a local favorite dishing up various wood-fired pizzas and hosting an expansive outdoor patio, and Brady’s, an upscale restaurant with a menu offering everything from Korean-style short ribs to vegan alfredo carbonara, make up the city’s food scene. Local shops like the Southern Daisies boutique sell high-end clothing, while the WaterTower Plaza hosts chain retailers like TJ Maxx, Petco and Barnes & Noble. Close to home, West End Diner serves home-style breakfast plates, while Simply Sweet by Christine offers options for dessert. Shoppers can head to the Market Basket about 2 miles east of the neighborhood for groceries. The store is in the same shopping plaza as The Mall at Whitney Field. Here, residents will find a movie theatre, big-box stores and chain restaurants. The closest medical center, UMass Memorial HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital, Leominster Campus, is right in the neighborhood.
AP and honors classes at Leominster High
Students are zoned for Leominster Public Schools. They can attend Northwest Elementary School, Sky View Middle and Leominster High School. The elementary and middle schools receive B-minus scores from Niche, while the high school receives a B. Currently, the high school offers over 20 Advanced Placement and Honors level courses, as well as 12 vocational shops.
Celebrating the home of the plastic pink flamingo
The city of Leominster hosts various events in Monument Square, a plaza downtown. Celebrating one of Leominster’s most famous residents, the Johnny Appleseed Festival has live music, a bounce house and more than 200 local vendors. Pink Flamingo Day is a 15-year June tradition that honors the plastic lawn decoration originally manufactured in Leominster. Every October, those participating in Leominster Frights deck out their houses with spooky decorations. In September, the Leominster Food Truck Festival, one of the city’s most beloved events, brings over 25 food trucks, a beer garden and live music to Monument Square, while the Festival of the Trees at City Hall is a December fundraiser where residents bid on donated Christmas trees.
Getting around West Leominster and heading to Boston
Those living close to downtown Leominster can use sidewalks to walk to attractions in that area; however, traveling throughout the city and surrounding areas requires a car. Massachusetts state Route 2, which runs from upstate New York to the Boston area, spans the neighborhood’s northern border. The neighborhood is also near U.S. Interstate 190, which leads 25 miles south to Worcester. There’s a Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority commuter train station about 2 miles from the neighborhood. It goes 40 miles east to Boston in less than 90 minutes. Locals also head to Boston when it’s time to fly, taking domestic or international flights from the Boston Logan International Airport. The Montachusett Regional Transit Authority Route 9 bus connects Leominster to Fitchburg and has stops at the WaterTower Plaza shopping center. The Twin Cities Rail Trail, a 5-mile trek popular with walkers and bikers, also connects the two areas.
