About Levelland, TX

A small city in the Llano Estacado plains

Levelland is in the semi-arid, vast plains of the Llano Estacado region, 30 miles from Lubbock. Though the horizon is limitless, the city's population is shrinking, from over 13,000 in 2010 to 12,000 people in 2023. "Many people were born and raised here, but they're welcoming, and you never feel like an outsider," says Wendy Jones, a broker with KW Lubbock who lived in Levelland for a decade. Jones said the friendliness common across West Texas is what made her stay, and while Levelland isn’t growing, she describes it as thriving. "It's maintaining itself. I think with too many of these communities, one store closes and then the next year another store closes. This little community continues to bring new life to its downtown." The local economy is driven by cotton farming, petroleum production and manufacturing.

Something old, something new in downtown Levelland

Levelland’s nine-block downtown circles the old courthouse. "There's several stores that have been staples for many, many years," Jones says. "But there are newer coffee shops and some newer eateries. I think there's a new wine store now." Locals can go antiquing, find home decor and western wear, and even worship on Sunday at Oneighty South Plains Church. "There's also a movie theater that was restored as a live theater,” Jones says. The city has over 124 mosaics, 110 of which are downtown. One of them, "Land of Soil, Oil, and Education," speaks to area industries and local South Plains College.

It’s a good time at Levelland's Ladies Night Out

Downtown hosts dozens of events annually, including Trunk or Treat on Main Street in October. Ladies Night Out is Jones’ favorite. “It’s a Christmas event. They have door greeters at each store dressed up in Dickens-style top hats and tails, carriage rides, and of course the square is decorated."

Brick homes, some on acreage, in Levelland

Levelland has modest subdivisions, many brick homes and some new construction. “New neighborhoods are built a few blocks at a time," Jones says. “You’re not going to see a 500-house subdivision put in a community like this. These are all small neighborhoods.” Lot sizes can be less than 10,000 square feet to over 2 acres. The median home price is $200,000, significantly lower than the state median.

Windy days in Levelland, and decreasing crime rates

Jones says Levelland gets relatively mild winters and four seasons that can sometimes happen all in one day. “The wind will take out power poles on a pretty regular basis around here. When they are on the news, standing on the coast with 100 miles an hour wind, I’m thinking, 'We had that last week.' But it’s everyday news out here.” A mix of hail and strong winds blew through Levelland in 2024, causing widespread power outages and leveling the local cotton mill, Penny Newman.

Free sledding for all ages at Lobo Lake Sled Hill

Levelland never gets proper snowfall, so the city created its own winter fun at the small, artificial Lobo Lake Sled Hill. After sledding, it's a quick step from snow to grass and fishing at 11-acre Lake Lobo, named after the school district's mascot. Levelland maintains a dozen city parks hosting athletic fields and playgrounds. The Parks and Recreation Department also oversees the city's civic center and public pool.

South Plains College, the school for rising county music stars

The Levelland Independent School District earns a B-plus on Niche and serves more than 2,600 students. “The entire town goes to the high school football games,” Jones says. “Any small west Texas community is going to be the 'Friday Night Lights' type of place.” South Plains College is in Levelland, and Jones says it’s highly regarded for its music program.
