Family-friendly, yet fun lifestyle in a convenient Lexington location

The story of how the Chevy Chase neighborhood got its name is an interesting one. Founded by Henry Clay Simpson, a direct descendent of Statesman Henry Clay, in the early 1900s, he took the name Chevy Chase from a Maryland golf course he once belonged to. Going from one place to the next seems to be a theme for the neighborhood nowadays too, with a convenient location right between downtown Lexington and the University of Kentucky. Bridging the gap between these areas, Chevy Chase is considered one of the city's sweet spots for enjoying a fun lifestyle that offers walkable shopping and dining, while still having a family-friendly community to come home to at the end of the day. “That's why Chevy Chase is the neighborhood you take your friends from out of town to,” says Jeremy Perryman, Realtor with United Real Estate. “It is a community filled with history and class, something you only see in storybooks.” Just minutes from some of Lexington's most popular tourist attractions, from Rupp Arena to its downtown museums, Chevy Chase is a quiet, family-friendly neighborhood lined by a colorful array of homes featuring architectural details from the early 1900s. Backgrounded by shady ornamental trees, colonial revival facades and tranquil cul-de-sacs, the neighborhood's well-connected community often gets together for fun celebrations that keep neighbors on a first-name basis. More than that, however, Chevy Chase is special in that folks living here can have any experience they want. Whether walking down the street to meet a friend at The Beer Trappe or taking the kids out to play at nearby Ecton Park, Chevy Chase sets up residents to enjoy a high quality of life, just minutes from the heart of downtown Lexington.

Early 20th-century homes with unique Kentucky architecture

Looking at the early 20th-century Cape Cod, ranch-style and colonial revival homes that sit along Chevy Chase's narrow streets and beautifully landscaped lawns, it isn't hard to see the appeal of this Lexington neighborhood. “People love the area because of the charm these homes express. They are a far cry from the typical homes we see today. The overall vibe is historic, high-end and desirable,” says Jeremy Perryman, Realtor with United Real Estate. Beneath the gently swaying canopies of leafy oak and maple trees, homes in Chevy Chase all have their own character and styles, from stylistically slanted eves and exposed timber to stone facades or dormer windows peeking out from second stories. Folks can often be seen greeting neighbors from front porches, relaxing in spacious backyards, or ambling beneath the neighborhood's hundred-year-old trees. With such unique architecture and an air of peace and quiet that can be felt throughout the neighborhood, "Property values in Chevy Chase appreciate more consistently than almost any other zip code in Lexington," says Rick Pannell, a local resident and Broker who sells homes with his wife and partner Realtor, Whitney Pannell. The average sales price of the neighborhood is about $640,000 dollars, which is almost twice the average for the Lexington metro. From about $450,000 to $750,000 dollars, homebuyers can find ramblers, cottages and colonial revivals offering three to four bedrooms, while larger designs with over 3,500 square feet of space tend to sell from about $900,000 to $1.2 million dollars.

Walkable shopping and dining with colorful local flavors

In addition to downtown Lexington being located just two miles away, residents of Chevy Chase are close enough to walk to some of the best restaurants in the city, frequently taking leisurely strolls through the neighborhood to dine with the family or meet some friends at local watering holes like the historic Chevy Chase Inn (open since 1933) and The Beer Trappe. With a cozy cellar featuring lacquered wood and burnished gold trimmings, The Beer Trappe is a locally owned and neighborhood-friendly bar that serves a diverse list of rare craft beers for patrons to enjoy. "The owner is a real beer guy, and very nice. He goes to Belgium a lot, too, so you know it's good stuff," says Pannell. For another option, Josie’s is a Chevy Chase staple and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The horseshoe-shaped counter welcomes patrons with waiters who take pride in their southern hospitality, serving freshly made waffles topped with a choice of fresh blueberries, Georgia pecans or chocolate chips, combined with the sweetness of Maple syrup. Bourbon n' Toulouse is another well-known Chevy Chase establishment that serves authentic Cajun and Creole cuisine and "Just feels very local and unique when you walk in," says Pannell. True to the neighborhood's spirit, this popular restaurant has garnered its great reputation by simply cooking great food and creating a sense of community for the Chevy Chase residents. Folks often enjoy the Chicken Étouffée, which is a spicy roux made with shredded chicken, and traditional Creole entrees like gumbo and jambalaya. When cooking at home, Kroger is also just a walk away, located right on Euclid Avenue.

Heading outdoors around Chevy Chase

Chevy Chase is only a few minutes from Woodland Park, which is one of the oldest parks in Lexington. For active residents, Woodland Park is a go-to destination. Folks from across the area come to play tennis with friends or make fun memories while playing with their kids at the playground. In addition to sports facilities like a baseball diamond and plenty of green space where dogs can often be seen running around or playing fetch, Woodland is also home to a skate park where visitors can practice dropping down the bowl, grinding on ledges, doing tricks or just taking it slow and practicing their balance. Another main feature of the park is the aquatic center, where people can enjoy lap swimming for exercise, jumping off diving boards or exploring the child-friendly play pool, which includes climbing structures, fountains and lots of spraying water. Just west of Chevy Chase, the State Botanical Garden of Kentucky's arboretum is another popular spot for getting outdoors. Walking along the peaceful trails of this quiet retreat, visitors can appreciate the subtle beauty of nature while learning about different tree species across 100 curated acres of grassy lawns and horticultural gardens. Housed in an expansive colonial revival facility and featuring a full 18-hole golf course, the Idle Hour Country Club is another nearby option where residents can practice aiming for a hole-in-one, socialize with friends or get active at the club's tennis courts, fitness center and swimming pool.

Coming together for the Chevy Chase Street Fair

In October, the Chevy Chase community gets together for the Chevy Chase Street Fair. A block along Euclid Avenue is closed to through traffic so that residents can get together with their neighbors and families to participate in fun activities and support local food, beverage and retail vendors. Bourbon n' Toulouse and Charlie Brown's Restaurant are just a few of the businesses that open their doors to the public, while folks enjoy exploring the fair or talking with friends in the street. "It's fun because everyone brings their dogs, there are live bands to listen to and kids can do arts and crafts," says Pannell.

Getting around the Chevy Chase area

With High Street forming Chevy Chase's northwest border, it's easy for residents to take a short bike or bus ride over to Kroger, Woodland Park, or Lexington's downtown, which is about two miles away.
