Historic district just south of downtown Lexington
Despite the development surrounding Historic South Hill, this Lexington community reflects a commitment to preservation. Residents can stop by Old School Coffee, where the "City School No. 3" sign reflects what the building was once used for. Or they can stroll into the long-running Joe Bologna's Restaurant & Pizzeria, a converted 1890s Jewish Temple. Many of the homes here date back to a similar period, including red brick Federals and Greek Revivals. Some residences are marked by the Blue Grass Trust plague, which designates them as historic buildings. The community is also home to apartment complexes that have become popular among those who attend the nearby University of Kentucky, which has spurred much of the development around the community. "Really a lot of new is built around me," says Joe Bologna, the owner of Joe Bologna's Restaurant & Pizzeria. "I hope they'll keep the old historic areas," he adds, citing preservation as an important cause to many Historic South Hill residents. The community sits steps away from nearby green spaces and downtown Lexington, making this spot particularly convenient for commuters.

Old School Coffee House, Joe Bologna’s Restaurant & Pizzeria and more
At Old School Coffee, patrons order hand-crafted drinks like The Student and The Principal. “I think they have the best coffee in town,” says Zara Christopher, the manager at Old Town Violins, a full-service orchestral strings shop in the community. For food out, Christopher says she walks to the award-winning Joe Bologna’s Restaurant & Pizzeria. “I saved all of the historical parts of this building,” Bologna says. “We kept and restored all the stained glass windows, which are from the 1890s; the original floors are black tile from Eastern Kentucky.” Just one street over is The Local Taco, which is particularly popular among University of Kentucky students. Locals can head next door to Tin Roof to enjoy drinks and live music. For groceries, they can go to Historic South Hill’s Target location. Those wanting fresh produce head just outside of the neighborhood to the Lexington Farmers Market’s Warehouse Block location, which runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays from mid-May until mid-November.

Brick Federals, Greek Revivals and more
Historic South Hill's Adam Rankin House dates back to 1784, making it Lexington's oldest home. However, the tightly packed sidewalk-lined streets are also home to 19th-century constructions like brick Greek Revivals and Federals — some of which are townhouses. Italianate designs, French Colonials and a few midcentury Craftsman constructions also add character to the streets. "A lot of the properties can't be torn down or renovated from the outside," says Paula Elder, a Realtor with The Brokerage who has experience in the community. "They have to follow a bunch of historic overlay guidelines." Interestingly, apartments make up most of the housing here. There are also some townhouses — some of which are newer builds that replicate the original housing styles of the 19th century — and condos. Listing prices typically range from just under $200,000 for a one-bedroom condo to $1.4 million for a midcentury townhouse with a renovated interior. Historic South Hill receives a CAP Index Crime Score of 9.

Town Branch Commons Trail and nearby recreational spaces
Bikers and walkers alike head on the Town Branch Commons Trail, a path bordered by limestone features and native grasses. It connects the Legacy and Town Branch trails, giving locals a 22-mile route that passes by green spaces like Triangle Park. Here, people gather to challenge their friends to a game of chess or, during the winter time, spend the evening on the seasonal ice-skating rink. In summer, many head to the nearby Woodland Park, where kids let their imaginations run free on the large pirate ship play space at the center of one of the outdoor pools. Meanwhile, skaters practice their tricks at the dedicated skate space. Soon, locals will be able to enjoy their free days at the highly anticipated 10-acre Town Branch Park, which will bring everything from a dedicated space for dogs to an amphitheater to the downtown area. Some people here may spend their free days hitting the greens at the invite-only Idle Hour Country Club.
