Old-school homes meet contemporary surroundings on Lexington’s emerging north side
Close to the north side of Lexington, the tranquil community of Meadowthorpe offers a nostalgic living with a twist of contemporary appeal. The area’s position on the city’s less dense north end lends it a residential feel, but a 2-mile trip along Main Street brings residents into the heart of the city. Residents also have close proximity to major Lex landmarks like the Lexington Cemetery, well known for its beautiful landscapes, and the Distillery District, a former industrial area turned entertainment hot spot. “It's a great place to get drinks with friends if you prefer more of a quiet atmosphere than the chaos that is bar crawling near [the University of Kentucky] campus,” says Cara C., a Lexington resident off-and-on for more than 19 years. “Also it has Crank & Boom [Craft Ice Cream], which is a huge plus.”
Cape Cod and Colonial-influenced homes from the 1950s
While Meadowthorpe’s surroundings offer an abundance of city-style comforts, residents can enjoy a serene lifestyle at home. "You don’t feel like you are part of the big city, even if you are minutes away from downtown," says Jeremy Perryman, an agent with United Real Estate who has sold homes in central Kentucky for more than six years. The neighborhood’s architectural identity hearkens back to the early days of American homes, with major influences from Cape Cod and Colonial Revival styles coming through along its parallel streets. High-pitched roofs with red brick siding are a common sight under thick tree layers, with a few homes even bearing nameplates along Glendale Avenue. Most of the area’s properties date back to the early 1950s, with a few later additions from the 1960s onward. Prices generally range from the $150,000 mark up to $500,000, and the neighborhood has an equal distribution of home renters and owners.
Quirky shops and restaurants alongside reliable retail stores
Meadowthorpe’s connection to some of Lexington’s major roads places multiple shopping options close to residents. Kroger, Family Dollar, Dollar General and Walgreens stores offer the essentials close by, and additional options such as Walmart, Ross and Aldi are available to the east along New Circle Road. Shoppers also have access to a treasure trove of secondhand goods: Vintage clothing, vinyl records and knick-knacks fill the shelves at POPS Resale, while Goodwill and the Meadowthorpe Antique Hall provide other used goods and décor for varying tastes. Food options with a local flair include Bad Wolf Burgers, where residents can enjoy modernized diner fare with playful nods to pop culture. At Apollo Pizza, residents can order pizzas made with Ale-8 salsa and other uniquely Kentuckian ingredients. Thoroughbred keeps the local pride going with horse-themed décor and menu items in a laid-back dive bar setting. Fans of handcrafted coffee can get their daily espresso drinks and pastries from the drive-thru at Leestown Coffee House. Familiar stops such as Zaxby’s, Firehouse Subs and Applebee’s round out the area’s dining options.
Axe-citing entertainment nearby and in the Distillery District
Battle Axes Lexington offers a variety of entertainment options in a single space. Residents can try their hand at the axe throwing that lends the complex its name, blow off some steam in the smash room, reach high speed on the go-karts and zip lines and more. Just south of the neighborhood in the Distillery District, the Burl entertainment complex offers local and international music acts, coin-operated arcade games and local beers in neighboring buildings. The neighborhood is also 2 miles away from more live shows at Manchester Music Hall.
Studying the days away at Fayette County Schools
The neighborhood’s youngest students can attend Meadowthorpe Elementary School, a public school close to the neighborhood’s north end on Forbes Road. The school has a student-teacher ratio of 13:1 and earns an A grade on Niche. Leestown Middle School holds a B-plus grade. Paul L. Dunbar High School offers more than 50 extracurricular programs and 20 athletic teams. The school earns an A grade on Niche.
Neighborhood parks, exercise and cherry blossoms in the springtime
Close to the area’s northwest side, Meadowthorpe Park offers the closest outdoor recreational space. Residents can find a playground with updates from 2023, tennis courts and walking trails within, alongside the Meadowthorpe Community Center, available for private events. Across the street on Turner Commons Way, Gym Blue places a comprehensive strength training center into a converted warehouse space, while Sora Aerial Arts offers acrobatics, dance and yoga classes next door. South of the neighborhood, city residents cherish memories at the Lexington Cemetery. Renowned for its beauty year-round, the cemetery’s vibrant cherry blossom trees are a particularly treasured sight for locals in the early spring.
Connected to Leestown Road, Main Street and New Circle
Meadowthorpe directly connects to New Circle Road/KY-4 to the north and Main Street/Leestown Road to the west, giving residents quick access to two of Lexington’s major thoroughfares. Locals are about 2 miles northwest of downtown Lexington and 3 miles away from the University of Kentucky campus. For medical concerns, UK Health Good Samaritan Hospital is 2 miles away. For travel beyond the Lexington area, Blue Grass Airport is 5 miles southwest of the neighborhood via New Circle Road and Versailles Road. Residents can walk and bike to multiple shopping and dining destinations along Leestown Road/Main Street, which also offers multiple Lextran bus stops.
