Life on the water is a part of the culture in the South Florida suburb of Lighthouse Point. This community of about 10,000, located 15 miles north of Fort Lauderdale, stretches along the shores of the Intracoastal Waterway and offers an easygoing lifestyle close to local shopping, dining and schools. “With the number of canals, there are many avid boaters here,” says native Christine Balistreri Van Buskirk, a Realtor with Balistreri Real Estate. “It’s a hidden gem, and I think it’s the best place to live in the country… People grow up here and then raise their families here. They never leave.”

Waterfront mansions in Lighthouse Point

The median cost in Lighthouse Point is around $747,000, significantly higher than the national median. Most current listings are single-family homes with a median price of almost $1.4 million. Developed mostly from the 1950s through the 1970s, the city offers a variety of styles ranging from grand Mediterranean Revivals to sleek contemporary mansions. Flood insurance is recommended and updated hurricane-proofing is essential. Hurricane season ranges from early June to late November.

Five parks and the Intracoastal Waterway

The city has five parks, including Dan Witt Park and Frank McDonough Park, the community’s main recreational hubs. These recreational areas feature facilities for tennis, basketball, soccer and more. Port 32 Lighthouse Point has more than 100 wet slips among various convenient amenities, including a mail room and daily shuttles to local retail shops. Residents use the Intracoastal Waterway and go as far south as the Florida Keys and can reach the ocean easily by going through the Hillsboro Inlet, just outside the city.

Waterfront restaurants at Port 32

There’s no shortage of seafood around Lighthouse Point, but folks don’t have to leave the neighborhood to enjoy it. The Nauti Dog Marina Cafe and Cap’s Place are popular local waterfront restaurants in Port 32 Lighthouse Point. More dining options are on the community’s west side, along U.S. Route 1, locally known as Federal Highway. The strip contains various other conveniences, from grocery stores to private practices. The closest hospital, Broward Health North, is just 2 miles away. Healthcare is one of the city’s leading industries.

Nearby Pompano Beach High earns an A-plus

Broward County Public Schools earns a B-plus on Niche. The district offers a school choice program, allowing students to apply to highly rated schools like Pompano Beach High, less than 5 miles away. The all-magnet school is graded A-plus and is No. 23 on Niche’s list of Florida’s best public high schools. It offers advanced studies with a focus on international affairs and information technology.
