Lakefront homes offer a serene setting three miles west of Downtown Lincoln
Three miles west of downtown, the small lakefront neighborhood of Capitol Beach is so named because it offers views of the Nebraska State Capitol and Capitol Beach Lake. Most of the 300 permanent residences and summer homes have direct waterfront access, and the remaining few have a clear view of the water. But, before you grab a pail and shovel to build a sand castle, Matt Kirkland has some news. "First, there is no beach,'' said the owner of Giving Realty and a Lincoln real estate agent for over 20 years. “Capitol Beach has an interesting backstory. A man-made lake was created in the late 1800s to preserve surrounding wetlands. Then, in the early 1900s, the city built an amusement park here, but it failed. Finally, in the 1960s, local developers set aside a few hundred acres around the lake for waterfront homes, and that’s when the neighborhood really came to life.”
Today, the location and the designs of the midcentury resort-style homes keep Capitol Beach one of Lincoln's fastest-selling neighborhoods. Capitol Beach Lake is a 300-acre, salt-water lake that is open to members for boating, fishing, sailing and water skiing. While the lake is private, with access limited to homeowner/member residents, the nearby Saline Wetlands Nature Center's trails and exhibits are open to the public. Many species of fish, including bluegill and carp, can be caught there.

Small local parks and abundant wetlands offer plenty of green space
Just outside the neighborhood is Lakeview Park, a nearly three-acre green space at the corner of 20th and O streets. Little kids enjoy the playground and climbing structures while older kids practice their moves on the basketball half-court, but there isn't a lake there, though. There is a lake -- more than one, actually -- at Oak Lake Park, two miles west of the neighborhood. In addition to its site for the city's Independence Day fireworks display, there are facilities for outdoor gatherings, fishing, paddling and winter ice skating.

The Museum of American Speed revs up the engines of car lovers
Auto enthusiasts also have a place of their own. The Museum of American Speed displays a collection of race cars, hot rods, and other examples of high horsepower. "It's one of the coolest venues in Lincoln,” says Realtor Kirkland. “Race car fans and history lovers alike have so many things to enjoy, from the automotive art gallery to the monthly Cars and Coffee Car Shows.” In 2024, the museum is sponsoring a coast-to-coast campaign from New York to San Francisco of a 1924 Model T Ford in celebration of the Model T’s 100th Anniversary. Local media follow the “Sea to Sea in a Model T” story with regular coverage.
Capitol Beach residents are three miles away from almost any event they want to enjoy at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Commonly called PBA, the multi-purpose event space opened in 2013 and is home to the University of Nebraska men’s and women’s basketball teams. It also hosts year-round events and concerts, from classic car shows and ice skating competitions to marathons and Metallica.

Capitol Beach is just four and a half miles from Lincoln Airport
Residents can take Uber, taxis and shuttles to Lincoln Airport, just four and a half miles northwest. It’s an easy drive along Highway 77, normally taking less than 10 minutes. While locals will often walk, bike, and ride scooters inside Capitol Beach, car travel is still the most popular mode of transportation in and outside the neighborhood. Lincoln’s bus system, StarTran, does not have routes inside Capitol Beach, but residents can access its Arnold Heights Route 46 at the 1900 block of West Q Street, just a couple blocks south of the south edge of the neighborhood.
