Founded in 1893, Havelock is still a thriving community in Northeast Lincoln
Incorporated as a township in 1893, Havelock was launched by Burlington Railroad for its employees with shops, restaurants and businesses lining downtown streets. Though annexed into Lincoln in 1922, a lot of Havelock’s original identity and connection to the railroad remain today. Residents say they live “in Havelock, not Lincoln,” according to Saul Bakewell, a Realtor with Nebraska Realty, a Lincoln real estate agent for more than 10 years. “Being from Havelock is a part of their self-image and a point of pride.’’
A rail yard still operates on the north edge of the neighborhood, and land opens up to the east. The remainder of Havelock, eight miles northeast of downtown and flanked by quiet suburban neighbors Bethany and University Place, resembles a small town within a large city with residences and businesses interspersed, with 800 acres to the east encompassing Havelock Research Farm, run by University of Nebraska. “Historic Havelock” describes Havelock Avenue and the broader neighborhood. As the heart of the community, historic buildings from the late 1800s look much like they did in 1893. In addition to shops, restaurants and food markets, residents still attend St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, shop at family-owned grocers and have their cars repaired by local shops that have thrived for generations.
The Joyo Theater is a popular location for entertainment in the Havelock neighbrohood.

Shops and restaurants offer variety and plenty, much as they did in 1893
1893 Coffee & Cream is named after the year the neighborhood was founded. This famous coffee shop promotes the history and identity of Havelock and fosters community pride. Featuring drinks named after the city, including the Lincoln Latte and Havelock Hot Chocolate, it welcomes patrons to rent its conference room. Engine House Café offers hearty American breakfasts, lunch and dinner in an old fire station with brick walls and the original wood ceiling. Locals head to The Isles Pub & Pizza for casual dining with a home-town-friendly vibe. With pizza by the slice, happy hour food, and TVs at the bar, it’s a comfortable place to relax with friends and catch up with one’s favorite sports teams. Residents pick up groceries at Russ’s Market at Havelock, which offers fresh meats, produce, a pharmacy and weekly specials.

Small homes are ideal for Havelock buyers
“Historic Havelock is one of the largest Lincoln neighborhoods with some of the smallest homes – but that is what buyers here like,” Bakewell said. Single buyers, first-time homebuyers and people who travel often for business are some of the people to whom Bakewell has sold. He says, “Small homes appeal strongly to certain buyers in a way we haven’t seen in generations. Not everyone is raising a family. Many buyers travel for a living. A small home is often ideal for them.” Bungalows from the early 1900s have recently sold for about $120,000 to $140,000. Ranch-style homes with two to three bedrooms have recently sold for about $150,000 to $200,000. The largest homes in Havelock are new split-level homes that have recently sold for about $375,000 to $400,000.
