Settled to the west of the Hackensack River, Little Ferry is a sedate borough in New Jersey’s Bergen County, less than 10 miles away from northern Manhattan. Along with a few surrounding towns, including South Hackensack, Teterboro and Moonachie, the area is commonly referred to as the Meadowlands, a reference to its wetlands area. “It’s a very small town, with a family-friendly environment where a lot of residents know each other,” says Little Ferry native and broker/owner at RE/MAX Lifestyles, Jennifer Romero. “One of the major pluses is that it’s very easy to commute.”
Family homes, with very limited availability
Single-family and two-family homes with brick and vinyl siding are common throughout the borough. Inventory is generally very low, and some properties may be in need of renovation. A small ranch house might run between $425,000 to $469,000. Larger two-family homes might go for between $870,000 to $1.2 million. A few condos can be found in developments like Evergreen Court, but availability is rare. In general, prices may be lower than in nearby Hasbrouck Heights, which is directly west.

For seventh through 12th grades, students attend Ridgefield Park Junior-Senior High School, which has a B rating from Niche.

The borough offers a few transportation options. “Little Ferry has a lot of express bus lines into NYC, with two different routes for NJ Transit,” says Romero. “You have access to Routes 3 and 46, and Route 80 is very close.” Drivers can use Interstate 95 to reach Lower Manhattan, about 12 miles away, and buses depart frequently to Port Authority. Train stations can be found nearby at Teterboro and at Essex, offering connecting routes to Penn Station.

New school buildings and flooding concerns
In 2018 the Washington School building was closed and there are plans to build a brand new Washington Middle School to replace the facility. Area flooding is a concern and flood-resilience projects are being undertaken by the state to improve drainage infrastructure.
