The center of the Tri-Valley's wine country
Though it may look like any other leafy California suburb, the Vineyards in Livermore is the true birthplace of the Tri-Valley region. Livermore’s namesake, Robert Livermore, introduced the first wine grapes to the valley there in the 1840s, inaugurating a winegrowing tradition that won America’s viniculture industry a gold medal at the 1889 Paris Expedition. “Livermore Valley Wine Country is a cherished gem among locals, who frequently take advantage of the region's offerings,” says Jenny O'Leary, the marketing coordinator for Livermore Valley Wine Community. The founding of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in 1952 has only expanded the Vineyards’ reputation for innovation. Surrounded by employment options, the Vineyards combines a quiet residential atmosphere with the flavors of chardonnay, pinot and sauvignon.
A neighborhood growing with Livermore's population
As the Livermore National Laboratory employs nearly 9,000 staff and thousands more work in Livermore’s wineries, the Vineyards sprung up to house this growing community of professionals. Much of this neighborhood’s housing stock dates from the 1970s to 1990s, but the Bay Area’s turn-of-the-century suburbanization has led to a proliferation of early-21st-century housing as well. Arts and Crafts residences mix with Colonial Revival and ranch-style homes along the Vineyards’ cottonwood-lined streets. Homes with between 1 and 3 bedrooms range in price from $400,000 to $1.6 million, while those with between 4 and 6 bedrooms vary from $975,000 to $2.5 million.
Livermore High educates budding engineers
Arroyo Seco Elementary School (and its alternative, Jackson Avenue Elementary School), East Avenue Middle School and Livermore High School each receive A-minus ratings from Niche. Supported by the nearby national laboratory, Lawrence High features an innovative Green Engineering Academy, which is a specialized four-year program open to 60 students. The Livermore National Laboratory offers programs fosters students in fields from computing to nuclear science.
Green spaces and trails around every corner
The Vineyards is full of green spaces varying from neighborhood parks to sprawling wineries. Located on the site of a former almond orchard, the 14-acre Almond Avenue Neighborhood Park includes a playground, picnic areas and open fields for sports. The Arroyo Bike Trail links this park with the expansive Sunken Gardens Skate Park and, farther southwest, the sports stadium and multi-use trails at Robertson Park. The Vineyards and Livermore are also home to several golf courses, but the Club at Ruby Hill distinguishes itself as one of Northern California’s longest at 7,400 yards.
Viniculture and dining at Livermore's edge
The Vineyards takes its name from eastern Livermore’s vibrant viniculture scene, and Livermore Avenue is lined with wineries. Over 50 of these establishments host weekly movie nights and live music, the most notable event being the four-day TASTE festival of vineyard tours and tastings. “The Livermore community is exceptionally welcoming, with a strong sense of pride in our city,” O’Leary says. “The collaborative spirit among winemakers reflects this. We attract a diverse crowd to our wineries, from seasoned connoisseurs to newcomers eager to learn about wine.” The Vineyards is also home to a diverse selection of restaurants, including the barbecue joint Emil Villa’s Hickory Pit, the boutique Patisserie by Simone bakery and the Southern Italian-themed Terra Mia fine dining venue. Safeway and Trader Joe's are located along both Interstate 580 and in downtown Livermore.
Highway and train access to San Francisco
The northern edge of the Vineyards runs alongside Interstate 580, which offers an approximately 47-mile journey into San Francisco and a 37-mile drive into downtown Oakland. The Dublin/Pleasanton BART station is 12 miles down the interstate and has a “park and ride” section.
