Spanish for “beautiful hill,” Loma Linda is a small town with a big reputation. Loma Linda is one of the world’s only Blue Zones: geographic areas where citizens enjoy extended lifespans and lower rates of chronic disease. “You'll see a lot of older folks walking the neighborhood streets and some even running,” says Yazmyn Hernandez, a long-time Loma Linda resident. Loma Linda’s health-centered culture began in the early 1900s when the Seventh-Day Adventists Church purchased the Loma Linda Resort, a healthcare resort, and converted it into Loma Linda Sanitarium, a full-service medical facility and medical school. The city is now home to Loma Linda University and Medical Center, a leader in medical study in a breadth of fields, including organ transplant and neonatology. “It’s a small town, but there are a lot of hospitals, outpatient clinics and medical offices. Most people are in the medical profession, and Loma Linda University is all about health sciences. People are staying after graduation and making a life here, which they haven’t always done,” says Johnny Cho, a Realtor with Re/Max Advantage and almost 20 years of experience. “Loma Linda has developed in the last 30 years, so people don’t have to leave the city. Everything is there.”

Hillside parks, trails and pet areas
With an emphasis on health and well-being, Loma Linda has several parks where residents can spend time outside in the fresh air. While the parks vary in size, most offer similar amenities like game courts, playgrounds, picnicking spaces and views of the mountains. Hikers and bikers can explore the trails, including loops around Scott’s Canyon at Hulda Crooks Park, one of the city's most popular green spaces. In addition to trails, the park offers a playground and game courts.
Loma Linda is surrounded by the San Bernadino and San Jacinto Mountains. Hikers and bikers also enjoy heading up into the slopes for scenic walks that provide vistas of the Inland Empire. The city does experience some environmental risks, like occasional smog, fires, floods and earthquakes. To mitigate potential risk, the city maintains a preparedness plan, including water pumping stations, water reserves and power generators.

Vegetarian dining options and specialty stores
Loma Linda does not have a huge dining scene, but an eclectic mix of restaurants is concentrated along Redlands Boulevard. “People come to Loma Linda for the medical centers and the lifestyle. It’s a very health-conscious area, with a lot of health food stores and vegetarian restaurants,” says Tyler Hungerford, a Realtor with Keller Williams Riverside with almost a decade of experience. Members of the Seventh-Day Adventist faith, a prominent percentage of Loma Linda locals, follow a predominantly plant-based diet. As a result, the city has a broad vegetarian dining scene, with half a dozen vegetarian restaurants and other local restaurants, from sandwich shops to sushi restaurants, serving vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. Gandhi Cuisine of India serves classic Indian dishes, both with and without meat. The city has no shortage of grocers, with places like Clark’s, an organic store, Loma Linda Market and Stater Bros. Markets. For more options, residents venture out elsewhere in the Inland Empire, like Rancho Cucomonga or Ontario.

Commuting throughout the Inland Empire
“I would have to say Loma Linda’s best is its location,” Hernandez says. “There are multiple ways to get to other cities like Moreno Valley, Riverside and San Bernardino, to name a few. It really is close to everything.” Loma Linda is part of the Inland Empire region, so it is within a 10-mile radius San Bernardino, Riverside and other Inland Empire communities. While Riverside Transit Authority buses do circulate in the city, more residents drive. While the hospital is a major feature of the city, it can cause excess traffic. Residents will need a car to get around. Interstate 10 borders Loma Linda and intersects with Interstate 215 just outside the city. There is no Metrolink station in Loma Linda, but the tracks do pass by the city and can cause excess noise. Loma Linda is close to two major commercial airports: San Bernardino International Airport, 5 miles north, and Ontario International Airport, 20 miles west.
Loma Linda University Church and events at Loma Linda University
Loma Linda University Church is a pillar of the community. In addition to regular services and daily prayer lines, the church hosts regular events oriented around the Seventh-Day Adventist faith. Visitors can participate in seasonal holiday celebrations, theatrical performances or support groups.
Loma Linda University Medical Center is another hub of activity in the community. Support groups for pregnancy, managing chronic illness or other health conditions operate out of Loma Linda Medical Center. Those interested in pursuing health-based careers can attend workshops offered to prospective university students.

A mix of housing styles
The city has a mix of newer Modern Traditional homes and classic styles like ramblers and Spanish Revivals. Most citizens are renters, so a lot of development focuses on multi-unit buildings. “I really like my neighborhood and the surrounding neighborhoods because they have older homes that do not all look alike. Just by looking at the houses, you can tell they're older because they totally stand out from plain houses you see nowadays,” says Hernandez. The median home price in Loma Linda is $600,000. Many buyers work in San Bernardino, Riverside or elsewhere in the Inland Empire, so Loma Linda’s location and price make it an appealing option. Most properties have a classic SoCal aesthetic, with stucco siding and tile roofs. Most single-family homes have small yards, often landscaped with native plants that can survive in the low-rain climate.
Hernandez says it’s common to see people out walking around, often heading to or from a neighborhood park. Loma Linda gets 280 days of sun a year, so residents often spend time outside. Loma Linda also experiences lower rates of violent and property crime than the California and national average.
