A close-knit neighborhood of events and local businesses
At an event called Strollers, neighbors leisurely walk through Bixby Knolls, enjoying steaming cups of coffee as they listen to morning birdsong. Together they amble along shaded sidewalks to see local businesses, streets of character-rich homes from as early as the 1930s and sometimes go on house tours. “People move there because it's got some great houses. Most are California bungalows and Craftsman architecture,” says Realtor Allison Van Wig who works with Keller Williams and has over three decades of experience. The weekly walk bonds the residents of Bixby Knolls, transforming them into a community of friends. Every week they explore, get some fresh air and try the newest restaurants on Atlantic Avenue. The close-knit feel of this group extends throughout the Long Beach neighborhood — from more local events to a retail center brimming with places to visit with family and friends.

A variety of houses on a hot market
The streets of Bixby Knolls have tree-lined sidewalks and landscaped yards, giving the community a suburban feel. “It’s a well-established neighborhood with attractive traditional homes on good-sized lots,” says Shannon Jones, who runs her own real estate team for Keller Williams and has over two decades of experience in the area. “Unlike a lot of places in Long Beach, though, it has custom homes, so there’s a variation in architecture you won’t find in a lot of other neighborhoods.” Many homes were built between the late 1930s and early 1950s and have since been renovated. Styles include Victorian-style remodels, Craftsman bungalows and newer condos. The bungalows range from $850,000 to $1.3 million, while the condos range from $450,000 to $575,000. “Houses move pretty fast on the market, and there’s low inventory right now, so a home will sell in about two weeks. One selling for over a million takes a bit longer,” Van Wig says.

A community focus with events and activities
The Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association fosters community spirit through its sponsored activities. First Fridays, a signature event, gathers residents along the Atlantic Avenue retail center every month. A lively crowd takes to businesses open late, with live music throughout the street. The Expo Arts Center and the association’s “Allery” also draw in diners with a muraled, outdoor food court in an alley. “That event draws a lot of people to the neighborhood,” says Jones. Another popular event is the Kidical Mass Bike Ride, celebrating over 10 years in Bixby Knolls. Starting at the toy store, children hop on their bikes for a 4-mile ride through the neighborhood, led by association staff members. Adults often join their children, and everyone enjoys treats provided along the path.

Shops and restaurants galore on Atlantic Avenue
“Bixby Knolls has undergone a real renaissance of businesses over the last 10 years or so, and residents have easy access to a variety of great shops and restaurants," says Jones. A Main Street-style retail hub, Atlantic Avenue draws in many neighbors thanks to its many local restaurants and brewpubs. In fact, the area has the greatest concentration of brewpubs in Long Beach. Neighborhood favorite Dutch’s BrewHouse grew out of backyard gatherings among friends. It serves pizzas paired with a wide beer selection in a dimly lit pub. “I love Willmore Wine Bar, where you can just go in and get a glass of wine and some apps. It's wonderful,” Van Wig says. The cozy wine bar has seating inside or out on a patio. Japanese-influenced HiroNori Craft Ramen bustles with dinner time guests in a modern atmosphere. “HiroNori’s ramen is super good and all homemade,” Van Wig says. For weekly errands, residents can go to the Bixby Knolls Shopping Center, home to grocery stores like Vons and Smart & Final Extra.
