Long Beach's city of gold
Like the legendary city of gold it’s named for, Long Beach’s El Dorado Park neighborhood is a hidden gem. Its quiet streets are lined with palm and gum trees, shadowing the well-maintained sidewalks and yards found throughout the neighborhood. Its standout feature is, without a doubt, the sizeable El Dorado Region Park, located in the center of the neighborhood. “Like most of the neighborhoods in the area, it’s a pretty quiet place, almost entirely residential,” says Realtor Russ Quackenbush of Think Boutiq Real Estate, who has worked in the area for over two decades. “What really makes it shine is El Dorado Park itself. It’s got trails, lakes, playgrounds, basically everything. And if you live in the neighborhood, that’s always available.” Like most of Long Beach, the El Dorado Park neighborhood was developed in the middle of the 20th century. The area west of the park was built up in the '50s during the regional aviation and manufacturing boom, while the El Dorado Park Estates community on the east side was built in the '60s, and was the first neighborhood developed by SoCal real estate behemoth Shapell Industries — now part of Toll Brothers. Today, the El Dorado Park neighborhood offers a suburban lifestyle next to an expansive green space that serves as a shared backyard for much of northeast Long Beach as well as a hub for recreational and cultural events.

Expansive El Dorado Regional Park
The neighborhood’s defining feature is the 470-acre El Dorado Regional Park at its center, which is split into an east and west section across the San Gabriel River, which bisects the park. While one might assume the neighborhood was named for the park, the El Dorado Park Estates development actually predates the regional park by a couple of years. The regional park, however, has long outshone the residential part of the neighborhood in terms of local fame. It’s the largest green space in the South Bay/Long Beach area, offering miles of paved multiuse trails, multiple fishing ponds, a nature center and a variety of athletic fields and courts. It’s also home to the sizeable Long Beach Community Garden, which has over 300 plots. And when residents want to switch up their exercise routine, they take their bike on the 12-mile Coyote Creek trail, which runs through a number of local and regional parks, and connects with LA County’s extensive network of spillway adjacent bike paths.
The course at El Dorado Park was designed by golf legend Ted Robinson, Sr. and built in 1962.

Local events at the El Dorado Nature Center
El Dorado Park is frequently busy with local festivals and events, many of which center around the El Dorado Nature Center. The center hosts seasonal workshops and educational programs that focus on environmental conservation and wildlife, along with the Eldo Nature Center Summer Concert Series and the annual Howl-o-Ween Halloween festival.

Varied housing options
The housing market on the west side of the neighborhood consists almost entirely of midcentury ranch-style homes, many of which have been heavily updated and stylized in recent decades. On the east side, the El Dorado Park Estates community features similar ranch-styles along with a significant number of split-levels and two-story homes, offering that bit of extra space that can be hard to find in LA County. Nearly half the homes in the neighborhood have backyard pools, perfect for those hot summer days when driving to the beach is just too much trouble. This might be one of the reasons homes aren't often for sale. “There’s very little turnover in the area,” says Quackenbush. “That says a lot about the neighborhood in and of itself. To me, that speaks volumes.” Homes in the El Dorado Park Estates neighborhood to the east of the park usually sell for $1 million to $1.5 million, while homes on the west side go for $800,000 to $1.5 million

Newcomb Academy and McBride High
Most local students attend Long Beach’s public schools, though a sliver of the neighborhood is in the Los Alamitos attendance area. Public schools in both districts are excellent. El Dorado Park’s own Newcomb K-8 Academy has a 9 out of 10 rating on GreatSchools and was recently named a National Blue Ribbon School by the Department of Education. Older students can attend McBride High School, which is rated 8 out of 10 on GreatSchools and offers specialized learning pathways in criminal justice, health and medicine and mechanical engineering.

Long Beach Towne Center
The El Dorado Park neighborhood isn’t all scenic greenspace and quaint residential blocks. The arterial roads surrounding the neighborhood are lined with popular shopping centers and restaurants. When locals need groceries, they can choose between three neighborhood supermarkets. And when it's time for a more comprehensive retail outing, Long Beach Towne Center borders the regional park to the north and has everything from Sam’s Club and Walmart to Lowe’s and Barnes & Noble. It’s also home to the local movie theater and popular barcade Dave & Buster’s.
When it comes to local dining, the scene is quintessential SoCal. There are a ton of solid Mexican spots in the area, along with a variety of well-reviewed East Asian eateries like Benley Vietnamese Kitchen — a great place to grab a quick banh mi. And it wouldn’t really be Long Beach without a classic California drive-through like neighborhood staple Volcano Burgers, renowned for their smash burgers and chili cheese fries.
