From Quaker farms to academic excellence
Once a haven for Quakers, Jericho has transformed into a Long Island suburb filled with a high-ranking school district, locally owned restaurants and established homes. “People who want to move to Jericho have heard about the schools and community from their friends or family,” says Elyse Mayer, a licensed real estate salesperson at Douglas Elliman Real Estate with over 31 years of experience. “If they come from Queens or Brooklyn, they want to be where it’s more peaceful with lots of trees, like in Jericho.” The neighborhoods, condos and business centers surround the Jericho Turnpike and Interstate 495. “I would say Jericho is most well-known for its education system, even over the last 30 to 50 years,” says Ross Spivak, the president and CEO of RES Consulting NYC, Inc. and Jericho volunteer firefighter. “We’re also centrally located in Nassau County. Putting traffic aside, you’re really 10 to 15 minutes away from wherever you need to be. We have friendly people here, too.”

Jericho Union Free School District takes first place
George A. Jackson Elementary School, Robert Seaman Elementary School and Cantiague Elementary School serve the community. George A. Jackson Elementary shares a campus with Jericho High School. STEM is held in high regard at Jericho High, as three students created an app called Evergreen to create solutions for food sustainability. “My kids love the education system,” Spivak says. “Kids hang out outside of class and during events at school. My kids also like the diversity of people that make up the community.” All five schools get A-plus ratings from Niche, and Niche ranks the Jericho Union Free School District as the top district in New York.
George A. Jackson Elementary School serves students in grades K thru 5.
Jericho Senior High School has 1,258 students enrolled.

Established homes and new builds
The sidewalk-lined streets often feature four-bedroom split-levels, Cape Cods or Colonial Revivals in neighborhoods such as West Birchwood, East Birchwood, White Birch or Princeton Park. Most homes sell in the $1 million to $2.5 million range, but a few on the outermost edges of the hamlet can cost $775,000 to $950,000. Some residents settle in gated condo communities like Maple Run or Hamlet East. “Jericho is extremely desirable. There could be one house with 30 interested buyers,” Mayer says. Jericho has some new construction going on. It's common to see homes torn down and replaced with new traditional designs before hitting the market for $1.5 million to $2 million. Mayer also points out that residents here often have homes on quarter-acre lots with big backyards, and many have in-ground pools.

Hicksville Station and I-495
Interstate 495 and the Jericho Turnpike run through the center of the hamlet. I-495 also guides travelers 22 miles to John F. Kennedy Airport. Commuting into Manhattan takes about 50 minutes when catching the train at Hicksville Station. “You can get a parking pass through the Town of Oyster Bay,” Spivak says. “They just recently built a parking deck, and finding a space usually isn’t an issue.” Homes here are also less than 3 miles from the Syosset Hospital, part of the North Shore University Hospital.

Practicing outside or finding a new read
The private Meadow Brook Club runs an exclusive 18-hole course for members. Robbins Lane Community Park sees soccer players practicing on the large field and kids hanging out on the playground equipment nearby. For more ways to have fun, some drive 4 miles to Cantiague Park to glide on the ice rink, jump in the outdoor pool or play a round on the 9-hole golf course. Jericho Public Library schedules indoor fun, like summer reading programs for adults and children, virtual creative writing workshops and story time.

Trying local restaurants and bars
Jericho Cider Mill keeps its shelves stocked with fresh cider, pies, ice cream and apple donuts. Each product is made with centuries-old recipes and Hudson Valley apples. Those looking for modern comforts stop by Jericho Commons to get braised short ribs dishes at Market Bistro. Spivak says he heads to the Whole Foods Market to grab fish, seafood and meat for a barbecue, but there’s also a Stop & Shop and H Mart in Hicksville for those who need additional options. Spivak also recommends the Fanatico Italian Bistro & Bar, which has a menu overflowing with Italian dishes and cocktails for happy hour. The Broadway Commons mall sits 2 miles south, off North Broadway, with popular stores like Target and Ikea.
