Convenient to Manhattan and South Shore beaches
New Hyde Park has a history of inviting people of all backgrounds to settle in this Long Island neighborhood. Dutch and English settlers may have founded the village in 1624, but more immigrants from a variety of countries turned the farmland into a home-filled area in the 1920s. “We’re like a half hour from the South Shore beaches,” says Grace Desiderio, an associate broker at ERA Caputo Realty who has been in the business for 27 years and lives in New Hyde Park. “And people are still able to get to Manhattan to go to work or even just to go see a play or something. We’re in good shape as far as location. I’ve had my house for 24 years. It’s a great area to live in.” Easy commuting options and a highly rated school district are two of the biggest reasons people buy a home here.
The New Hyde Park is named for Ann Hyde and was incorporated in 1927.
There are many retail stores and professional services along Jericho Turnpike in New Hyde Park.

Shopping and dining on Jericho Turnpike
Jericho Turnpike is one of the major routes for commuters, but it’s also lined with popular restaurants. “I’ve walked to stores from my house because it’s a really convenient area where you can go to a restaurant,” Desiderio says. “Some of them are a little walk, but it’s a nice thing to do on a spring night.” Umberto’s is an Italian pizza spot that’s been in the area since the 1960s. Yesterday’s Diner has a nostalgic interior design inspired by 1950s diners, and the Omega Diner in North New Hyde Park has a similar vibe and classic American dishes. Nova Asian Bistro is known for Japanese dishes. Residents here like to hop over into Floral Park to find some freshly baked treats at Buttercooky Bakery & Café. Stop & Shop is the closest grocery store, but residents can also head north to shop at the Iavarone Bros. Store or Target in the Lake Success Shopping Center.

Lower home prices than nearby areas
David Lau, a Realtor with Keller Williams Greater Nassau who has over 20 years of experience in real estate, says, “Homes in North New Hyde Park tend to be more expensive than the ones in New Hyde Park. This area also has a village tax and more special services than the northern area.” While North New Hyde Park homes often sell in the $900,000s, New Hyde Park homes range from $750,000 to $1.5 million. These Cape Cods and split-level homes feature large yards and long paved driveways. Homes sell after roughly a month on the market. “It’s rough for the buyers,” Desiderio says. “The inventory is so low that, even though the interest rates are so high, buyers have been looking for a house for a year and can’t find it. There’s a line out the door when you have an open house. People are losing houses left and right because somebody went all cash or somebody went $50,000 over.” Once residents settle here, they benefit from living in a highly rated school district and increasing home values. “Once you get a house here, the appreciation in New Hyde Park is such a positive thing,” Desiderio says. “Because if you do anything to your house, if you sit here for a couple of years, because of the school district and the proximity to Manhattan and the amenities here, equity grows. Money goes back into the house and builds up the area.”
One of the most popular styles of homes in New Hyde Park is cape cods.
Split level style homes can be found throughout New Hyde Park.

Landing in a top-rated school district
Lau says people who can’t afford homes in the Herrick or Great Neck School Districts settle in New Hyde Park for the New Hyde Park-Garden City School District, which has highly rated schools. Kids in the south half of the neighborhood can attend Hillside Grade School, while Manor Oaks William Bowie School teaches students in the north half. Both earn A ratings from Niche and offer prekindergarten through sixth-grade classes. The next step is the A-rated New Hyde Park Memorial High School.

Parks for pet and people
Memorial Park has plenty of open space to run around, as well as paved basketball courts and playground equipment. While visitors can stop by from dawn to dusk, the recreation department organizes weekly volleyball tournaments for anyone to join during the summer and clinics for basketball, tennis, lacrosse and flag football in the fall. According to Desiderio, the park is the latest public area to receive renovations, which the village regularly carries out to keep everything looking and functioning at its best. “They do a lot here to keep the neighborhood going, and I feel like our tax dollars are being used correctly because we have things like the park that are getting taken care of,” Desiderio says. Pet owners visit the Michael J. Tully Dog Park to let their furry friends run around off-leash and meet other dog parents. Michael J. Tully Park also features an indoor pool and a little league football field bordered by a running track. Those who want to use the outdoor pool, playground or tennis courts at Clinton G. Martin Park have to purchase an annual membership or daily pass. New Hyde Park residents get a discount.

GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

I enjoy living in New Hyde Park. I have many friends in the area. People that I have known all my life. It seems that when a neighbor does move away we are always fortunate that we get new neighbors that are just as friendly and helpful.
