Quiet Long Island hamlet popular with equestrians
North Great River is a quiet residential community tucked away between Islip Terrace and the expansive Connetquot River State Park Preserve. “Lots of homeowners maintain horse barns and can enter the park directly from their backyards or from down the street,” says Joan Brandmeier, a salesperson with Keller Williams Realty and resident of nearby Islip Terrace. Homes in this section are more modestly priced than those that line the Great South Bay across Sunrise Highway in Great River proper. The area is in close proximity to South Shore Long Island’s bay and ocean beaches, as well as the downtown commercial districts of Islip and East Islip.

The 3,473-acre Connetquot River State Park Preserve
One of the neighborhood’s main draws is the 3,473-acre Connetquot River State Park Preserve and its miles of bridle paths, specifically engineered for horseback riding. If not directly from their properties, locals can access this expansive green space from the Hike Trail entrance on the corner of Montauk Avenue and Amityville Street. Further in, the park has historic sites like the Connetquot Hatchery and the Gilded Age Southside Sportsmen’s Clubhouse, which is now a visitor center. Bayard Cutting Arboretum is yet another historic park.
There are plenty of sports fields in neighboring hamlets like the Westbrook Baseball Complex. SUSA Orlin & Cohen Sports Complex in Central Islip has state-of-the-art soccer fields and is right next to the Fairfield Properties Ballpark, home of minor league team, The Long Island Ducks. Nearby Hecksher State Park includes bayfront Overlook Beach, while Atlantic Ocean beaches can be found at Robert Moses State Park, a 16-minute drive.

Classic Long Island Hi-Ranches and colonials
Like in neighboring Islip Terrace, North Great River has midsized homes on half-acre lots that sell for significantly less than in areas south of Montauk Highway and closer to the water. Classic Long Island Hi-Ranches, built in the 1950s but often renovated, fetch between $600,000 and $700,000. There are also a handful of colonial revivals first built in the 1960s that are priced in a similar range. Comparable homes in East Islip can easily surpass the $1 million mark. Single-story ranches start a bit lower at $500,000. Most homes have above-ground or in-ground pools.

I'm still new to the area so it doesn't feel like home yet.

The neighborhood is great, though the school district is not what it was when I moved here 20 years ago, it is still a good district. We are close to the beach, highways and yet a very nice community. The cost of living is on the higher end, but the pay scale is also higher, so it basically balances out. Hard for the younger generation to live here unless they have a good secure job with decent income.
