Two neighborhoods, but one community

For the people who live there, North Lindenhurst and the village of Lindenhurst are one and the same. The hamlet of North Lindenhurst, called North Lindy by some, may not be part of the village, but it has many of the same services, including the same post office, library and school district. According to Frank Dell’Accio, the owner and broker of Century 21 AA Realty who has sold homes here for nearly 50 years, buying a home in the Lindenhurst area isn’t just a matter of buying a house — it’s buying into the community, too. “This town, it focuses on the residents,” he says, adding that there’s a long list of frequent community events and organizations meant for residents of the village and North Lindenhurst alike. “They bring the community together. The community comes out and they support each other. I’m passionate about it because I’ve lived here my whole life.” It’s a sentiment that many in the community echo. “I’ve been living here 53 years. I would never move,” says Marianne Lappas, a licensed real estate salesperson at Signature Premier Properties who lives in North Lindenhurst and has been selling homes here for 23 years. “It’s very neighborly. That’s what I like about it. My neighbors have the key to my house, I have the key to their house. We help each other. If someone is sick, we drop food off. And the whole town is like that. If someone needs help, everybody reaches out. It’s really unbelievable. That’s why I won’t leave.”

No village government, but a beloved town supervisor

The biggest logistical difference between North Lindenhurst and Lindenhurst is each community’s system of government. The village has a mayor and a board of trustees, while North Lindenhurst is managed by the town of Babylon. According to Lappas, Babylon’s town supervisor, Rich Schaffer, is a bonus in his own right. “He’s the best you’re ever going to find,” Lappas says. “He gives out his cellphone number and his email address, and if there’s ever any issue with the town that you see, he tells you to just call him on his cell or email him and he takes care of it right away. That’s unbelievable. Most towns don’t have that.”

Homes starting at around $500,000

North Lindenhurst is a typical Long Island suburb through and through, so its streets are lined with Cape Cods, ranch-style homes and hi-ranches, as well as a few split-levels here and there. Most of these streets lack sidewalks and yard sizes are comparable to those in the village — though a handful can be bigger. Homes here start at around $500,000 and usually max out at around $750,000 for a fully updated four- or five-bedroom home. According to Dell’Accio, some homes here even have auxiliary apartments that homeowners can rent out to offset the cost of the mortgage. Thanks to its more inland location, North Lindenhurst has only a moderate threat of flooding from major storms or hurricanes. Homes face only a minor risk. Just like any other community impacted by hurricane season, that time of year still brings a major risk of wind damage, but getting insurance to protect against it can mitigate the impact.

Highly rated education in Lindenhurst

Like children from the village, North Lindenhurst students may attend schools in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District, which earns an A from Niche. “I think the most important thing, even when I was growing up here, is you have one school system,” Dell’Accio says, stressing that while the district has six elementary schools, it only has one middle school and one high school. “Ultimately, everybody in this town will go to school with everybody else.” Dell’Accio also says that the district is known for its special-needs program, adding that some parents move to the neighborhood specifically because of it. Children in North Lindenhurst can start out at William Rall Elementary School before moving on to Lindenhurst Middle School and Lindenhurst High School. All three schools have A-minuses from Niche, and the high school is also known for its athletics program. In addition to sports, students can participate in film, mock trial and newspaper clubs.

Highway access, express trains from Lindenhurst LIRR station

Sunrise Highway and Southern State Parkway frame North Lindenhurst, from which residents can get onto Broadway or the Long Island Expressway relatively easily. “Most towns here, it’s miserable trying to get to those highways because it takes you forever,” Dell’Accio says. “But Lindenhurst doesn’t have that. They’ve got some major thoroughfares that get you up and out quickly.” Bus stops dot Straight Path, which is another of the neighborhood's main roads, and commuters can catch the trains on the Babylon and Montauk branches of the Long Island Rail Road from Lindenhurst Station. From there, the express train takes between 45 minutes and an hour to reach Manhattan’s Penn Station. South Oaks Hospital is about 3 miles southwest, and Good Samaritan Hospital is just over 9 miles away. It’s about 19 miles to Long Island MacArthur Airport and 25 miles to John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Athletic fields, popular pond at Babylon Town Hall Park

Babylon Town Hall Park has a colorful playground with a shock-absorbent poured-rubber surface alongside baseball and soccer fields used by local youth leagues. “There are community organizations for Little League baseball and football and soccer, lacrosse, all those things ranging from ages of 3 and up,” Dell’Accio says. “The community residents get very involved with activities for the kids.” Beyond this, the park has one more feature residents often enjoy: the pond. A local group has regular gatherings there to run their RC boats on its water, and on quieter days, others sit and watch the ducks. During the summer, North Lindenhurst Pool is a particularly popular way to beat the heat close to home. Residents also often head to Lindenhurst Village’s Venetian Shores Park for its extensive athletic fields or a dip in the Great South Bay at its beach. “There’s a marina, there’s a beach that has a little restaurant located on it that’s used during the summer months, there’s a boat ramp to unload your boats to go use the Great South Bay,” Dell’Accio says. For a little more excitement, Fire Island is only about 14 miles away, which usually works out to a 20-minute drive across the Great South Bay Bridge. Lindenhurst Memorial Library completed a $10 million renovation project in 2022, reopening with an airy, modern look. “I would just want to go in there and sit and look at it,” Lappas says. “It’s gorgeous — that stained glass.” Far from just a pretty view, though, the library hosts frequent events for residents of all ages from the village or the hamlet.

Fast food and diners close to home, local eateries in the village

North Lindenhurst has a smattering of fast-food restaurants and diners, including Southbay Diner, which is particularly popular for breakfast. Vicky’s Casa del Sabor is a hot-and-ready spot known for its empanadas, but it’s cash-only. Just a short drive away, Lindenhurst has an abundance of local restaurants, coffee shops, breweries and bars, so that’s where most locals head for more options. Restoration Kitchen & Bar is a local favorite known not just for its killer quesadillas and greenhouse setup for outdoor dining, but also for its dedication to partnering with local charities to give back to the community. Spassos Pizzeria is another place beloved for its balance between great flavor and kindness. “What I like about Spassos is that if there’s a homeless person or someone outside, he’ll take them pizza. He’s done that a lot, and that’s unbelievable,” Lappas says. “I like people that do things like that. And Spassos has the best pizza, trust me. He uses high-quality stuff, and he’s not that expensive.” There are also plenty of places for friends to meet for a drink. “There are micro-breweries that have opened up that are very family-oriented,” Dell’Accio says, adding that South Bay Brewery is located in a decommissioned bank with a seating area in the old vault. “People come with their kids. There’s a play area. The kids are playing, and Mom and Dad are drinking a beer, which I think is very, very nice.” For all its little eateries and boutiques, Lindenhurst Village doesn’t have big-name retailers providing daily essentials — that’s where North Lindenhurst’s strengths lie. Residents of the hamlet and village head there for the bigger essentials, from CVS or Rite Aid and UPS to King Kullen for groceries.

Entertainment around Lindenhurst Village’s gazebo

North Lindenhurst itself is quiet, a little removed from the bustle of Lindenhurst Village. But residents are always welcome — and encouraged — to attend the village’s many yearly events. The village’s gazebo, located in Village Square Park right in its little downtown, is the epicenter of entertainment throughout the year. “They do a lot, there’s just so much to do,” Lappas says. “There’s too much to even remember.” Local bands play in the gazebo every Friday evening during the summer, Saturdays bring a local farmers market to the little square and some Wednesdays, the streets around it are shut down for a village block party. “This past year, they had a New Year’s Eve party at the gazebo and shot off fireworks and had a parade,” Dell’Accio says. “About 4,000 people went. That’s how crowded it was.” The event even features a ball drop of its own. Lindenhurst is also well known for its yearly Oktoberfest celebrations, which draw even more people than New Year’s for plenty of food, drinks and local vendors.

I lived here for 17 years. Not bad in terms of living choices and crime (not a lot of crime), and has William Rall Elementary School in the area. However, I think there needs to be several improvements: 1. Public transportation- when I was a kid, there were good accessible bus options nearby (three bus routes: N72, S33, and S35), but now there is only one bus that runs through North Lindy (S33) 2. Drugs- this is a significant problem in the area. I know two people from this area that died due to them. 3. Infrastructure- some of the roads in North Lindy need serious work. 4. Drivers- be careful on Copiague Road and New Horizons Boulevard, as people tend to drive fast on those two roads (esp. New Horizons)

I love the convenience of the town. Everything is within an arms reach, but it is not always the safest place to be. Especially the north side. It isn't very easy for a teenager to find a job in this town either. People are reluctant to hire them because many kids in this town have set the stage for others. There is also a large drug problem in this community, along with negative influences. I personally would never want my child to grow up here but my life would be completely different if I grew up somewhere else without the rush of Long Island.
