Recreation and history in St. James
St. James, a Long Island hamlet along the north shore with history to spare, gives residents access to popular recreation spots while preserving its historic landmarks. “St. James is in Smithtown with stores, restaurants and history. It’s close to Stony Brook University Hospital, where I heard seniors can get free oral cancer screening services,” says Adelle Longo, a Licensed Real Estate Salesperson, GRI., with Laffey Real Estate. Many residents head south to spend the day walking around Smith Haven Mall or north for a quick vacation on quiet beaches. Commuters also have a direct path into central New York City with St. James station and the Smithtown Bypass. Whether locals want a history lesson or good food, they don’t have to travel far.

For some fun outside of town, the Smithtown Library- Smithtown Building offers group book discussions and nearby beaches make for easy day trips. “Nissequogue has high-end, exclusive beaches. You can also rent canoes at the Nissequogue River,” Longo says. Longo also recommends visiting the Sweetbriar Nature Center, where locals can see animals the center has rehabilitated. While there is no cost to enter the grounds, donations are accepted and some events require purchased tickets.

Shopping and dining in St. James
“The St. James General Store is the oldest general store in the United States that’s still open to the public. They have items you won’t find in grocery stores like sasparilla drinks and wooden barrels of candy,” Longo says. The store was founded in 1857 and has been renovated to preserve the historic architecture. Smith Haven Mall off Smithtown Bypass is a popular and busy place to browse over 100 stores or grab a table at The Cheesecake Factory, Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse or Mito Asian Fusion. Popular restaurants along Lake Avenue include Patio Pizza and Basil Cafe. The family-owned Mickey’s Ice Cream & Kitchen Space serves small-batch ice cream and customers can load up their cones with free toppings. For groceries, Adli and Trader Joe’s are off Smithtown Bypass, and there's a King Kullen nearby.

Homes are beautiful, outside family always loves to drive around my neighborhood just to look at peoples property. Very safe for kids, and great public schooling. Not much to do around the area, there is the typical movie theatre, mall right nearby and plenty of sled owned business and restaurants. Overall good town for raising kids and me and my brother liked having freedom to ride our bikes into the little town/ Main Street alone since we were young.

I've lived here for 24 years and its one of few last villages on Ling Island that is neighborly & safe. My husbands grandparents lived here and had a small business since then, many other small businesses have become staples of life here.
