Community with hometown feeling 33 miles from New York City

Appreciated for its active community, Syosset, 33 miles from New York City, is a hamlet within the Town of Oyster Bay. “I moved here from Queens and never looked back,” says Patricia Pascullo, an associate broker with Douglas Elliman. “It really gives you a hometown feeling.” People choose to live in Syosset because of its access to major highways and public transportation, but they stay for the community atmosphere. The hamlet of Syosset hosts seasonal and holiday events and parades. In April, the Spring Festival offers activities for all ages, including a petting zoo and food trucks. “Syosset has a Menorah and Christmas tree lighting,” says Pascullo. “We celebrate all religious holidays.” Along the main thoroughfare, Jericho Turnpike, are several strip malls, chain restaurants, and Syosset Hospital, a North Shore University Hospital division. The CAP Index crime score is 1 out of 10. The national average is 4.

Syosset Public Library 'is the jewel of the community'

“The Syosset Public Library is the jewel of the community,” says Sharon Long, the Assistant Director of the Syosset Public Library. “We’re always busy. Our library has a lot of year-round use.” The library hosts off-site events throughout the year, such as escape rooms and bowling and has at least one on-site event a week. “We decorated the parking lot with chalk to celebrate the beginning of June,” says Long. Every other year, the library hosts Sy-con, the library’s version of a comic con with vendors, themed arts and crafts and a cosplay contest. Residents looking to attend religious services may visit St. Edward the Confessor Roman Catholic Church, Midway Jewish Center, Faith Lutheran and other houses of worship.

I really liked what their public schools had to offer. They offered an abundance of A.P. classes to choose from. Along with that they also supplied you with plenty of college ready tools.

This is a great place to live. There are so many local restaurants, stores, malls, parks, and interesting places opening up. The schools are excellent and--especially during the summer--concerts and events abound.

I generally feel very safe. There's no guns, murder, or serious crimes. Occasional burglary, minor drug related crime among teenagers.
