Near beaches and easy access to NYC
West Babylon, one of the most populated hamlets in Long Island’s Town of Babylon, was once filled with a towering windmill and tulip fields tended to by Dutch farmers. After World War I, the area became a booming commuter community. The legendary American poet Walt Whitman even called West Babylon home in the 1830s when he taught at a school where the Great South Bay Shopping Center now stands. “New homeowners are drawn to the area for one reason: It’s close to Babylon and beaches. The prices are pretty affordable, and there are decent taxes, too, because you don’t get the village tax that Babylon has. Plus, there’s easy access to the city with the Southern State Parkway,” says JoAnn Cilla, the broker-owner of JoAnn Cilla Real Estate. West Babylon continues to welcome those looking for quick commutes into New York City and access to popular local parks.

Commuting from three LIRR train stations
“West Babylon is conveniently located between NYC and the East End, making it an ideal place to live. There are homes you can build anywhere, but we have three train stations nearby. It’s an hour to the city, and if you miss the train at Wyandanch Station, you can drive seven minutes to Babylon Station or eleven minutes to Deer Park Station. You can’t get that anywhere else,” says Travis Steward, president of the Belmont Lake Civic Association and a longtime resident. The Southern State Parkway and Sunrise Highway are also major commuting routes. Steward says he takes the Southern State Parkway to get into Brooklyn, 40 miles away, in roughly 40 minutes on a Sunday.

In the south half of town, Bergen Point Golf Course is an 18-hole course next to Bergen Bay Docks. The Town of Babylon residents can purchase parking passes for private beaches like Venetian Shores Beach, which sits along the town’s southern border and has a large parking lot, a playground and workout stations along the coast. Belmont Lake State Park provides sand-free fun. Southards Pond Park and Argyle Lake Park both feature walking trails and scenic spots to stop and watch birds resting on the water. In addition to having full shelves of books available to check out, West Babylon Public Library organizes craft events for locals to enjoy creating together.

New construction can go for $675,000 to $700,000, but there’s no new development going on right now,” Cilla says. Most feature Cape Cod or ranch-style designs, large yards, paved driveways and tall trees. Some homes with water views or recent renovations land in the $800,000 to over $1 million range.

West Babylon Union Free School District serves most students living in the area. In the north half of town, Santapogue Elementary School and Tooker Avenue School receive A-minus grades from Niche. Kids in the south attend South Bay School, which also gets an A-minus. Regardless of whether kids live in the north or south, they learn at West Babylon Junior High, a B-plus school, before moving on to West Babylon Senior High School. West Babylon Senior High takes conservation seriously, as the Environmental Club participated in an Envirothon competition in 2024, and the school earns an overall A-minus. Those who live north of Southern State Parkway may fall in the Wyandanch Union Free School District, and those closer to Venetian Shores Beach land in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District.

Shopping and dining in West Babylon
Locally owned restaurants that serve American staple dishes include Terrace Diner and Infinity Diner, but Cilla also says most people go to Babylon to visit the Argyle Grille & Tavern for dinner or Lindenhurst to get Greek cuisine at Cosmos. There are small quick eateries like Gino's Pizza, too. Steward highlights Angie’s Soul House, a restaurant that serves Caribbean-inspired dishes in a dine-out-only setting. “It’s always busy from the moment it opens. Hundreds of people wait in line for about 30 minutes, but it’s a great spot,” Steward says. Katch is a bar and restaurant on Venetian Shores Beach that helps beachgoers refuel or relax with live music and water views. Great South Bay Shopping Center on Montauk Highway has Marshalls, Old Navy and Ulta, but most drive to the Walt Whitman Shops in Melville or about 15 minutes to the Tanger Outlets in Deer Park. There are many churches throughout town, including the Faith Tabernacle Church of God and St. Nicholas' Greek Orthodox Church. The West Babylon Lions Club hosts an annual Saint Anthony’s Feast at Our Lady of Grace Church. The group also organizes bingo nights at the church and joins the West Babylon Fire Department for a Christmas tree lighting and parade. “There’s always something going on here. Thousands of people show up for our Belmont Lake Civic Association concert series and fall festival. More than 10,000 show for our Christmas tree lighting event where there’s a tree as tall as the one at Rockefeller Center, fireworks and ice sculptures,” Steward says.

I like that I live near a large park. I wish that it was closer to NYC and that had more food options. Needs a better public transportation system.
