An Upstate resort community near Utica
Eagle Bay is an Upstate New York suburb that is located at Long Lake, New York near Utica and Rome, New York. The area, which grew at the turn of the century, is also local to the Adirondacks Mountains. Water enthusiasts would like to know that there are several lakes and rivers near the neighborhood, including Fourth Lake, Seventh Lake and North Branch Moose River. The area is known for its tourism, especially during warmer months and when the leaves change. Brandon Mosher of River Hills Properties LLC. says the community is a “picturesque Upstate New York town for people who value an outdoorsy life.” Most of the housing stock consists of lake homes with an average size of 1,403 square feet. The lots average 12,632 square feet. Prices range from $123,000 to $250,000. Some of the Lake houses have housekeeper cottages.
The nickname "The town that loves refugees" refers to Utica. Between 2010 and 2020, 2,600 migrants were resettled in Utica, and since 1979, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Utica has resettled almost 17,000 refugees in Utica. The Fiscal Policy Institute estimates that one in five people in Utica are either refugees or their offspring. According to Utica realtor John Brown of Coldwell Banker Faith Properties, the neighborhood is "a heterogeneous community." He remarks, "There's a crazy mix of ethnicities." As a result, the region, including the Eagle Bay neighborhood, has a lot of international flavor. The Utica region is home to speakers of over fifty different languages, he continues.
Known as a manufacturing hub during the Industrial Revolution, Utica collapsed economically when its industries relocated their plants, much like many other Rust Belt communities. Midway through the 20th century, population losses to the suburbs and neighboring Syracuse also affected the local economy. The current resurgence of the local economy can be partially attributed to the refugee influx, as the low cost of living in the area has drawn in new people. In addition, Brown claims that the newcomers produced a "fabulous labor pool." He claims, "They essentially saved the town."
