Los Alamitos is a small city in Orange County between Long Beach and Garden Grove that’s home to around 12,000 people. The city its known for its excellent school district and small-town feel. It’s also home to Joint Forces Training Base – Los Alamitos, a military base that employs 850 people and thousands of national guardsmen and reservists. The base, which includes an Army airfield, takes up much of the southeastern side of the city, while residential neighborhoods, commercial strips and industrial corridors make up the rest.
“The school district is one of the major reasons people are moving here, and it’s really well situated for people who need to commute to Irvine or Los Angeles,” says real estate agent Philip DeMatteo of First Team Real Estate, who has worked in real estate since 2003 and grew up in the area. “It’s also coastal. The ocean breeze blows all the way up to Los Alamitos.”

The western edge of the city is bordered by Coyote Creek and the Coyote Creek Bikeway, a nearly 10-mile paved path that runs along the border of Los Angeles County through largely industrial and commercial districts.
It’s also just a few minutes to El Dorado Park, an expansive Long Beach park with miles of walking paths, grassy fields, playgrounds and athletic fields. Shopping and dining close to home
There’s little in the way of shopping, dining and entertainment in Los Alamitos. That said, residents are very close to several shopping centers, including Old Ranch Town Center, which is just south in Rossmoor. It features a Sprouts Farmer’s Market, Target, Kohl’s and Ralph’s Fresh Fare. Residents can head about 5 miles south to State Route 1 to shop at Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods or catch a movie at AMC Marina Pacifica. Housing market remains resilient
The median home price in Los Alamitos is around $1.3 million, and homes typically spend around 33 days on the market, selling much more quickly than the national average. DeMatteo says the housing market in the Los Alamitos area is strong, despite higher interest rates. “It’s a very good real estate market. We’re typically seeing between one and six offers on a home over the course of about six weeks,” he says.
Single-family homes in the city are mostly two-story older builds from the 1960s with big front windows to let the sunshine in, stucco facades and brick or stone detailing. Newer builds from the early 2000s share the same charming mid-century look as their older counterparts. Lot sizes are a bit small, but there is still plenty of room for front lawns landscaped with drought-tolerant plant life or an extra-wide driveway. While most homes have garages, the streets are wide enough for parking, and sidewalks are abundant, giving plenty of space for an evening stroll.
