Secluded enclave in Los Altos Hills
Between Los Altos and San Jose, the wooded hills of Loyola have a rural feel within the high-tech world of Silicon Valley. Uphill, away from the busy highways, the temperature lowers as the elevation rises approaching the Rancho San Antonio County Park and Open Space Preserve. Loyola is “a pastoral and secluded environment with large lots,” says Owen Halliday, Los Altos native and vice president of client experience at Christie's International Real Estate Sereno. “It’s also got exclusive amenities like the private Los Altos Golf & Country Club.” Just off the fairway is Westbrook Avenue, where Mark Zuckerberg lived in 2004 with a team of entrepreneurs and engineers as they created the early iterations of Facebook. They rented the place for $5,500 a month. Since then, it’s been home to other tech startups and executives. Loyola is less than 10 miles from the corporate headquarters of several major technology companies. They are accessible via Interstate 280, which runs through the neighborhood.

High-end, private residences and estates
Loyola contains single-family homes and mansions. Prices range greatly from $2.9 to $9 million, though some have sold for as little as $2.5 million and as much as $16 million. These are some of the most expensive homes in the region: as of October 2024, Loyola home values are more than double those of the San Jose metro area. Prices depend on home size and acreage. The neighborhood’s overall CAP Index crime score is 1 out of 10, significantly lower than the national average of 4.
Loyola is not walkable or bikeable; its narrow, hilly and winding roads have no sidewalks or bike lanes. Part of the neighborhood lies at the bottom of the foothills; here, new traditional builds with gabled roofs and Mediterranean-inspired homes with brick accents have small, landscaped lawns. Some overlook the golf course. Heading southwest and up the hills, the narrow, shaded streets wind and the trees get thicker, providing Loyola estates with more privacy. Some properties are gated or fenced, and homes range from Colonial Revivals to Victorian-inspired builds to flat-roofed postmodern mansions. Many come with open floor plans, solar panels and pools overlooking the surrounding Santa Clara County.
Large estates in Loyola have multiple stories with ornate architectural features.
Many residents choose to build pools to enjoy the California sun in the Loyola area.

Acclaimed, A-plus rated public and private schools
Students may attend Loyola Elementary, Blach Intermediate School and Mountain View High, which all boast A-plus ratings from Niche. As a nod to San Jose’s high cultural diversity, Mountain View High’s world language classes include Mandarin, Japanese and the standard Spanish and French. The area is home to several private schools for parents to consider based on their desired curriculum or religious affiliation. Waldorf School of the Peninsula is in Loyola; this A-plus-rated school serves prekindergarten through grade 12. “The schools are top-notch and very well-rated, which definitely draws people to move here,” says Halliday.

Loyola offers public hiking land and a private golf club
Loyola’s hills lead to the Rancho San Antonio County Park and Open Space Preserve, with more than 25 miles of hiking trails overlooking Loyola and the rest of Silicon Valley. Just off Rogue Valley Trail lies Deer Hollow Farm. Here, families can purchase fresh eggs and dairy products as they wave hello to the sheep, cows and other grazing animals.
Los Altos Golf & Country Club lies at the center of the neighborhood. With nearly a century of history, this club has tennis courts, an 18-hole golf course, a Mediterranean-styled clubhouse and a state-of-the-art aquatics complex featuring a heated lap pool and a poolside cabana. Membership is by invitation only.
