Urban living in Broadway-Manchester outside of DTLA
Situated in South Los Angeles, Broadway-Manchester spans just one and a half square miles, but thanks to its location, it provides its roughly 30,000 residents a city-like feel and access to everything there is to do and see in LA County. “We have a lot of families coming in, so the area is more family inclined, opposed to business oriented, like Downtown Los Angeles,” says Diana Escobedo, a library assistant at the nearby community Woodcrest Library. The neighborhood has restaurants, urban park areas, zoning for a huge public school district and convenient access to retail and major grocery stores. Metro Los Angeles buses and Interstates 105 and 110 provide locals with easy routes for commutes throughout the city and beyond, so those who are not in walking distance to work can quickly get to other neighborhoods. Broadway-Manchester is also within 5 miles of major general health center, Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital. Overall, Broadway-Manchester is an urban residential neighborhood with churches, schools, daycares, restaurants and convenient stores dotting its map.
Broadway-Manchester’s array of starter homes and turnkey properties
Homebuyers looking in Broadway-Manchester can find homes laid out in a grid pattern, with plenty of sidewalks, allowing easy access around the neighborhood by foot. However, most residents, in true Los Angeles fashion, own a car. Homes are primarily bungalows from the 1920s with Spanish-style influences, such as stucco facades in warm colors, barrel tile roofs and small, covered front patios, perfect for visiting with a neighbor. Lot sizes run a bit small, but there is plenty of room for a front lawn and a backyard with a patio or detached garage. Prices and sizes range from 800-square-foot starter homes beginning at $200,000 to turnkey 1,000-square-foot dwellings for just over $1 million. Escobedo says that the neighborhood is “starting to get more people,” so housing costs have been slowly increasing since the pandemic.

Located off Manchester Avenue is the South LA location of the famous local chain, which has been an institution since 1975. While many people dine at Roscoe’s for their eponymous entrée (two or three pieces of fried chicken with a side of waffles slathered in melted butter and syrup), the locals know that Roscoe’s also sells a range of authentic soul food dishes, including biscuits and gravy, red beans and rice, cornbread, greens and potato salad. After the main course, customers can treat themselves to some banana pudding. Shopping is also convenient in Broadway-Manchester for those who prefer to prepare meals from home.
