Once called "Little Africa"
Once a center of culture and commerce for Louisville’s Black community, Parkland is bouncing back after years of neglect. Parts of this neighborhood were called Little Africa in the early 20th century, and the neighborhood flourished with businesses like theaters, bakeries and a bank. Urban renewal projects of the 1950s replaced the thriving commercial area with low-income housing, and in 1968, things got even worse when a rally led to a violent clash between protestors and law enforcement. Two young Black citizens died, and property worth millions of dollars was destroyed. More than 50 years later, Parkland is rising again, and Louisville has noticed. "Parkland is an urban neighborhood with nice parks, accessibility to the expressway, and close to downtown" says Yvonne McAfee of Metro Advantage Reality.
UofL Health opened an urgent care clinic in 2021, bringing doctors to a medically underserved area. The Parkland Plaza community park opened in 2022 on the site of a former asphalt lot to bring more green space to the neighborhood. The Louisville Free Public Library is constructing a brand-new branch here, bringing library service back to the area for the first time since the 1980s. Parkland is a community brimming with local pride, evidenced by murals of prominent residents and its annual Parkland Day celebration, which celebrated its third year in 2023. There’s a lot of new in this west end neighborhood – and a lot to look forward to.

New park in Parkland
Despite its name, Parkland didn’t have a park until 2022. The Parkland Plaza gathering space is a “natural playground” built on the site of a former parking lot. People relax in wooden seating areas, lay on the grass and walk their dogs at the park, which also hosts the annual Parkland Day celebration. Parkland Plaza features a community garden and a “Parkland Love” mural depicting prominent neighbors serves as a colorful backdrop. Locals can walk from Parkland Plaza to Parkland Neighborhood Food Mart, which opened in 2020 and sells snacks and lottery tickets in an area considered a food desert.
The Parkland Love mural expresses how residents feel about their neighborhood.

Food bank and Southern cooking
Another COVID-era arrival is the Dare to Care food bank. The nonprofit keeps its community kitchen in Parkland, training people for culinary jobs in partnership with Catholic Charities. In 2021, Dare to Care provided 13,871,260 meals to hungry residents of Jefferson County. Its facility is next to Big Momma’s Soul Kitchen, a no-frills restaurant serving southern staples like macaroni and cheese, cornbread and smothered pork chops.
Many Parkland neighbors rely on public transportation to get around. Locals can take the bus via the Transit Authority of River City (TARC), which serves Louisville and southern Indiana. Street parking is typical for drivers, but some houses have driveways. The community has a crime score of eight out of ten on the CAP Index.
