German culture and friendly community in Kentucky
With 100-year-old traditions, charming homes and fun cultural cuisine, Schnitzelburg feels like a neighborhood that's been plucked out of Western Europe and plopped into Kentucky's largest city. This Louisville neighborhood got its name from the German immigrants who settled here in the mid-19th century, and their influence still lingers today; from traditional German eateries to annual cultural festivals. As part of the Three Points area, Schnitzelburg is "Known for being very walkable," says Wayne Madison, a lifelong resident and owner of local ice cream and food parlor, Dairy Del. Madison explains that the German immigrants who established the neighborhood moved here for the factories, which they all would walk to every day for work. Because of this early history, the neighborhood is home to several "Brewpubs that make their own beer. Even though it's a family-oriented neighborhood in the daytime, there are a lot of nightlife options around. It's never boring here." While signs of the past can still be seen walking throughout the Schnitzelburg, "The neighborhood is also becoming much more diverse, we have everybody here," says Madison. With a community that's both welcoming and dedicated to maintaining its historical feel, "Schnitzelburg's potential is just beginning," says investor and native Ethan Adams.

I call shotgun!
Walking along Schnitzelburg's calm residential streets, residents are likely to notice closely-spaced lots, tidy and well-landscaped yards and the occasional tall tree forming a background for life. Due to settlement in the mid-1800s, houses are mostly dated before 1939 and are often built in long and narrow shotgun layouts. Many Schnitzelburg homes take advantage of the long, narrow plots they sit on with small gardens and extended backyards, while midcentury cottage and Craftsman bungalow designs like front porches with brick columns and petite facades give these quaint homes a vintage charm. And, although driveways and garages are scarce, Schnitzelburg's wide roads allow for easy on-street parking. In terms of price, homes in the neighborhood offer a sizable amount for their price; the average sales price for the area is about with about $230,000, which is almost $50,000 dollars less than the average for the Louisville metropolitan area. Properties with around 1,000 square feet can sell for $160,000 to $200,000 dollars, while larger homes with up to 2,000 square feet can sell from $250,000 to over $400,000 dollars.

Burgers, bratwurst and beers in Schnitzelburg
It wouldn't be right to talk about a German settlement without mentioning where to grab some great German-American cuisine. “Every year, the town shuts down a few blocks for Beer Walk, where locals bar hop and listen to live jazz and blues bands,” Adams says. “Even though it’s a family neighborhood, there’s a bar on every corner.” Hauck's Corner, for one, is a pillar of the community. This tri-generational restaurant was once a general store that was a center for the community, but now has a menu featuring beer, cheese, bratwurst and plenty of lagers and ales on draft. Another spot for German comfort food is Six Forks Burger Co. - known for serving up the best burgers in town. The term hamburger comes from the German city of Hamburg, after all. In addition to other German eateries like Check's Cafe, residents can also stop by Dairy Del for some ice cream or fun food like nachos, corndogs and funnel fries. The Neon Flea is a popular choice for in-town vintage shopping, while locals can also head south to the Jefferson Mall to find major clothing stores like JCPenney, Ross and Old Navy. Locals will find chain restaurants and stores such as Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse and Walmart at the same intersection, and Kroger is within a just short walk of Schnitzelburg.

Community gardens and local recreation in Louisville
Occupying the ground where the Emerson School once stood, Emerson Park brings some outdoor charm to Schnitzelburg. Adams states the park “prides itself on having pop-up markets, where locals set up booths to sell their handmade goods.” This green space also offers a playground, gazebo and robust community garden, where residents from around the neighborhood come together to plant vegetables and flowers year-round. Emerson Park is occasionally home to community-organized events like The Flea Off Market , which features live acoustic musicians and local vendors. Just a short 2-mile drive away, Central Park features a playground for kids and several tennis courts that residents often enjoy playing on.

Kentucky Shakespeare Festival also occurs in Central Park and brings in thousands of attendees annually. Residents often enjoy coming to the free performances with food and their pets to watch while sitting out on picnic blankets. Schnitzelburg is also home to the World Championship Dainty Contest, which takes place on the last Monday of July every year during Dainty Fest. The game dates to the 1860s, played by children of German immigrants, and was made an annual event in 1971 by the late owner of Hauck's Corner, George Hauck.
Hauck's corner is famous for the Dainty competition held every July.

Getting around the greater Louisville area
Schnitzelburg, like its neighbor Germantown, is gridded and mostly residential. While maintained sidewalks make it walkable for leisure, many residents are car-reliant for traveling to work and necessary shopping. Fortunately for commuters, Schnitzelburg is within only 5 miles of Downtown Louisville, and the 43 bus line also goes downtown. Residents head north on South Shelby Street or Interstate 65 to get downtown, while trains and buses running in and out of the city can be found at the Louisville Union Station. Those traveling out of the state can find the Louisville International Airport just a few miles south, while, in the case of a medical emergency, Norton Hospital is the closest emergency center and can also be found right downtown.
Schnitzelburg residents enjoy walking the neighborhood for relaxation.
Schnitzelburg residents can take city TARC buses to get most anywhere in Louisville.
