Growing suburb in Southwestern Louisville

Anchored by the Dixie Highway, Valley Station is a growing suburb nestled along the banks of the Ohio River. Residential streets branch off this thoroughfare, leading to a collection of single-family homes, green spaces and public schools that reflect the area’s continued development over time. “This used to be a little bit more of a depressed area, but it’s come up a lot in the past decade or two,” says Neal Cox, a Principal Broker of the Judah Real Estate Group who has been selling homes in the area for over seven years. “There has been a lot of beautification and investment in businesses here.” About 20 miles southwest of Downtown Louisville, the suburb offers residents an active retail hub, new construction and a convenient commute.

Traditional homes and new construction

Most homes in Valley Station date back to the mid-1900s as the area underwent major suburban development in the 1950s and 1960s. This past can be seen today in the ranch-style, split-level and colonial revival homes that line the suburb’s streets. Around Dixie Highway, three-bedroom ranch-style homes with brick or shingled exteriors sit on quarter-acre lots, with prices ranging from about $120,000 to $200,000. Further from the highway, the suburb is continuing to develop, and new construction is common. Homebuyers in the Orell Station subdivision can find three-bedroom new traditional homes built in the early 2020s starting at about $330,000.

Residents are minutes from major thoroughfares. “Valley Station sits on Dixie Highway,” Cox says. “That’s a four-lane highway that runs right through it with a ton of businesses around.” The highway connects to I-264, making it easier for residents to traverse the 20 miles to Downtown Louisville. There are also several bus stops served by the Transit Authority of River City along Dixie Highway. For longer trips, locals are about 15 miles from the Louisville International Airport.

Historic farm and trail on the Ohio River

Before Valley Station’s suburban development began in the mid-1900s, the area attracted farmers with its prime location along the Ohio River. This past is preserved today at the Riverside, Farnsley-Moremen Landing, a 300-acre historic farm and home reflecting Federal and Greek Revival architectural styles. The farm also contains an entrance to the Levee Trail, one of the oldest sections of the Louisville Loop traversing the top of a raised flood wall. When completed, the loop will contain over 100 miles of multi-use trails.
