Gladwyne, a picturesque neighborhood in Lower Merion Township near Philadelphia's famous Main Line rail corridor, has a mix of newer, luxurious homes and older properties dating to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Woodmont is a must-see landmark overlooking the river, built in 1894 for Alan Wood, Jr., a steel tycoon and U.S. congressman. Many famous people have called Gladwyne home, including Philadelphia sports legends Allen Iverson and Chase Utley. The Philadelphia Country Club was built here in 1890 after acquiring land from Woodmont and has been a prominent fixture in Gladwyne ever since. The private club, which offers a 27-hole golf course, is one of the oldest in the country and hosted the U.S. Open in 1939.

Students attend Gladwyne Elementary School, Welsh Valley Middle School and Lower Merion High School, where late NBA star Kobe Bryant led the Lower Merion basketball team to a state championship in 1996. Niche gives all three schools an A-plus rating. In 2010, the high school named its new gym after Bryant. The high school’s boys’ tennis team has also won 10 state championship titles.
