Clayton-Carter is one of the more geographically attractive parts of Lubbock

At the northern tip of Lubbock, but close to what's considered the eastern part of the city, Clayton-Carter offers quick access to the interstate, the airport and outdoor attractions. The neighborhood is named after Clayton Carter, a Texas Tech alum who also served as a leader in the growth of Crosby County. The area is near one of the more geographically diverse areas in Lubbock, says Tarvis Grant, broker for TGA Realty and Property Management, who’s been selling homes in the area for over 20 years. “I think East Lubbock’s landscape is one of the more attractive parts of the city,” he says. “It has a lot of elevation changes, and you have the lakes, while other parts of the city are just flat.”

Bordered by I-27, Lubbock Loop

Interstate 27 borders the neighborhood, leading about 4 miles south to downtown Lubbock, and 3 miles north to Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport. State Route 289, which locals call the Lubbock Loop, also borders Clayton-Carter and circles the entire city. University Medical Center is located 6 miles west in Texas Tech’s campus. Just north of the neighborhood, there’s a growing business park that includes companies like Amazon and Budweiser.

Traditional homes starting around $100,000

The neighborhood features midcentury ranch-style homes and new traditionals from the past 25 years. Houses are arranged along gridded streets with sidewalks and streetlights. Properties have driveways, and some newer homes may have attached garages. Houses here range from $100,000 to $200,000.

Estacado High-Texas Tech partnership

Students may start at Carmona-Harrison Elementary, which receives a C from Niche, before going to Cavazos Middle, which also earns a C. Estacado High also gets a B-minus and offers an early college program with Texas Tech University, which is less than 5 miles south.

Neighborhood playground, nearby country club

At the south end of the neighborhood, Clayton Carter Park provides a playground and open green space. Just north, the Lubbock Country Club offers an 18-hole course, tennis courts and a heated swimming pool. Traveling 3 miles south, Mackenzie Main City Park features hiking trails, a public golf course and a dog park. And 4 miles south, Mae Simmons Park has a disc-golf course, and Dunbar Lake is a popular fishing spot.

Locally operated drive-in, more retailers downtown

Cuevas Drive In on Ash Avenue is locally operated and serves American favorites. Clayton-Carter residents have to travel a few miles for more dining and for shopping. There's a Walmart Supercenter 3 miles south. Downtown Lubbock and the Depot District also offer more dining less than 5 miles south. “Currently, the city is budgeting to continue to do upgrades to the downtown area to make it more attractive to visitors,” says Grant. Popular restaurants here include Cast Iron Grill for Southern dishes and Triple J Chophouse & Brew Co, Lubbock’s oldest brewpub.

Outdoor events, historic theater downtown

Fishing derbies are held throughout the year at Dunbar Lake, including the kid's derby in July. The Cactus Theater, a historic venue downtown, regularly hosts concerts and plays. And the South Plains Fair in September features amusement rides, food vendors and live entertainment.

We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
