East Lubbock neighborhood with complex history and natural beauty
Parts of Dunbar-Manhattan Heights were destroyed in a devastating tornado in 1970. But the neighborhood's history is written in its resiliency. Home to the area's first high school for Black students, the Lubbock neighborhood and school were named after Paul Laurence Dunbar, a poet and writer who embraced the African-American experience as he became one of the first writers of color to cross the literary color line by also writing about white society. Built in 1922 and integrated in 1970, his namesake Dunbar High School — now junior high — educated generations of students. Then as now, the neighborhood is also home to some of Lubbock’s most beautiful natural assets. “I'm going to say it's probably the most beautiful part of Lubbock when you get over there to the parks and to the river,” says Cole Whisenhunt, a Realtor with Keller Williams. While homes in Dunbar are more modest than in other parts of Lubbock, the east side is home to Dunbar Lake Historic Park and its rolling hills — an uncommon topography for much of West Texas.
