Character and charm near the center of Lubbock

Near the center of Lubbock, Wheelock & Monterey offers larger homes with convenient access to the rest of the city’s attractions. “It’s an older, well-established neighborhood featuring large ranch-style homes with tons of character and charm,” says Wendy Jones, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty, who’s been selling homes in the area since 2006. The neighborhood is named after Frank E. Wheelock, who helped combine the original settlements of Old Lubbock and Monterey in 1890 to form the current city.

Larger, ranch-style homes starting in the $100,000s

Ranch-style homes built from the 1950s to the 1970s are common here. Houses are packed tightly together with small yards, though the homes are larger than those in surrounding neighborhoods. Homes also have driveways, and most come with attached garages. Prices range from $100,000 to $250,000. Wheelock & Monterey's CAP Index Crime Score is 6 out of 10, above the national average of 4.

Athletics programs at Monterey High, Texas Tech

Students may start at Wheelock Elementary, which gets a C-plus from Niche, before going to Slaton Middle, which receives a C. Monterey High earns a B and has a successful athletics program, including a state championship win for their girls' basketball team in 2025. Texas Tech University, known for its athletics programs, is 2 miles north.

Getting around on the Lubbock Loop

State Route 289, also known as the Lubbock Loop, circles the city and gets residents pretty much anywhere. Commuters can take Interstate 27 north 100 miles to Amarillo, and south 5 miles where it turns into U.S. Route 87. The closest hospital, Covenant Medical Center, is 2 miles north. Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport is 10 miles north.

Neighborhood playground, other nearby attractions

Wheelock Park provides a playground, tennis courts and an open field. Just east, Clapp Park has a hiking trail, fenced dog park and a Municipal Garden & Arts Center. Two miles north, Maxey Park features a lake, baseball diamonds and a playground. And 5 miles north, the 250-acre Mackenzie Main City Park offers hiking trails, a public golf course and an informative Prairie Dog exhibit.

Local restaurants and grocery stores in the neighborhood

The north edge of Wheelock & Monterey has popular local restaurants like Vizo’s African Bar & Restaurant and Manara Cafe Authentic Lebanese and Mediterranean Cuisine. Mirch Masala, an Indian grocery store, is in the north end. Along the southern edge, Taquería Autlán serves Mexican dishes and Rain Cafe offers American favorites. Across 50th Street, there’s a Market Street grocery store and The Home Depot. “Residents also do a lot of their shopping in Southwest Lubbock,” says Jones. The South Plains Mall is less than 5 miles west and has 150 additional stores.

Community theater, other events around Lubbock

The Lubbock Community Theatre on 35th Street has been hosting local productions and classes for over three decades. The South Plains Fair, which has been held since 1914, takes place in September and includes amusement rides, food vendors and live entertainment. Ranch Day, held at the National Ranching Heritage Center in April, features demonstrations, farm animals and informative exhibits. The Lubbock Arts Festival has exhibits and performances by over 100 artists. The Flatland Film Festival in September showcases films from around the world. And the Clapp Park Pumpkin Trail provides a family-friendly activity for Halloween.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
