Nature abounds in this New England bedroom community
Home to over a dozen conservation properties and numerous locally owned farms, Lunenburg is a Worcester County bedroom community with a rural atmosphere. About 25 miles of nature trails span evergreen forests and wildflower fields. Residents can skate across Marshall Pond during the winter or buy a membership to Shirley Lake for summertime fun. A few Colonial Revival-style community hubs and eateries are along Massachusetts Avenue, and Fitchburg is just a quick drive away for more commercial options. “Compared to nearby Leominster or Fitchburg, we’re higher when it comes to the median house price,” says Lynn Walsh, a sales associate with Coldwell Banker Realty and Lunenburg local. “It’s so centrally located. It’s desirable for people who want to get out of the city because they can get back to the city quickly.”

Lunenburg has custom-built country estates on spacious lots
Lunenburg’s core has 1-acre lots filled with Colonial Revivals and Queen Anne dwellings from the early 1900s. Farther from Massachusetts Avenue, four-bedroom ranch styles with unfenced yards dot asphalt roads. “Lunenburg is known as a heavily wooded area, but that allows buyers to custom build a house because the lots are larger,” says Kerryann Murphy, a real estate agent with Lamacchia Realty, who has sold several homes in the area. Pine trees line long driveways leading to country estates on parcels as large as 7 acres. These dwellings are typically built within the last decade and feature Colonial or modern farmhouse architecture. Buying here can cost between $500,000 and $800,000, a range higher than the average $350,000 selling price in nearby Fitchburg or Leominster.

Skiing, swimming and hiking are all within arm’s reach for Lunenburg residents
Cross-country skiers and snowshoers trek across frozen ponds at Cowdrey Nature Center throughout the winter. American beech trees shading Robbs Hill’s 2-mile gravel route change into golden hues every fall. Monarch butterflies and bees fly around Lunenburg Community Pollinator Habitat, a 2-acre walking area with orange milkweeds, pink cosmos and other native plants. Youth baseball diamonds surround Marshall Pond, which becomes an ice skating spot when it freezes. Homeowners surrounding the 350-acre Lake Shirley have automatic access to the waterway. However, non-residents can also pay $300 per household for a Shady Point Beach membership to use the boat launch and campground. Nearby, Whalom Lake has a public beach just off Prospect Street.

Lunenburg locals can get farm-fresh groceries or head to big-box options
Right next to Town Hall, Hilltop Farms is a small, locally owned grocery store, but big-box options like Walmart Supercenter and Hannaford are immediately west along Massachusetts Avenue. Residents can stroll through rows of apple trees and pluck their own fruit during the fall at Flat Hill Orchards. Walsh says locals can pick up milk in reusable glass bottles from Stillman Dairy Farm. Eggs, beef, and honey are also sold at its red barn storefront off Lancaster Avenue. Green picnic tables dot the parking lot of Conrad’s, a summer-only counter service eatery known for its fried clams and ice cream since 1951. Bad Larry’s is another locally owned spot, offering cheeseburgers, chicken wings and regular live music nights. More restaurants and retailers await along Main Street in the neighboring town of Fitchburg, 4 miles west. Fitchburg also houses the nearest hospital, HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital.
