'Cozy, quiet' in Sandusky

“Sandusky has always been a historic area in Lynchburg,” says Alison Pettit, a local Realtor with Mark A. Dalton and Company. “It’s a cozy, quiet neighborhood that has been a staple in Lynchburg for many years.” Most locals know the Sandusky neighborhood, 5 miles from downtown, either for the local schools or for Historic Sandusky, a plantation home built in 1808 that is now a time capsule and museum. Historic Sandusky was visited by U.S. Presidents Thomas Jefferson, William McKinley and Rutherford B. Hayes and was the headquarters for the Union Army during the Civil War. In 2000, the Historic Sandusky Foundation bought the home, which now works in partnership with the University of Lynchburg to restore the property. Beginning in 1959, Lynchburg was the headquarters of the General Electric Communications Products Department. The company left Lynchburg in the late 1980s, but reminders can be found in neighborhood homes. Residences often had apartment-building attachments or basements and wet bars for GE employees visiting from out of town. “I live on Rhonda [Road],” says Pettit. “Where all the engineers and executives lived, and I sold several homes over there, and they all have that extra space.”

Playing disk golf at Sandusky Park

“Sandusky Park is huge for disk golf,” says Pettit. The park has an 18-hole disk golf course, picnic benches and a paved walking path. While the Sandusky Park is a fun place for residents to play, it’s also a nature preserve. The park houses native plant species such as the American sycamore, box elder, tulip poplar and others. If residents look carefully, they may spot a perennial kiwi vine near Blackwater Creek. On a 3,000-square-foot area near Rhonda Road, the City of Lynchburg’s Parks and Recreation Department plants wildflower seeds. The park is a dedicated “no-mow zone” from spring and into most of the fall to protect the wildflowers.

Ghost tours and art classes in downtown Lynchburg

“Liberty is our largest school,” says Pettit. “And is always offering many events.” Liberty University is a large private university within Lynchburg that is heavily involved in the community. The university offers a Summer Storytime at their Curriculum Library for children and a Snowflex Family Fun Friday at Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre. The family fun event has bouncy houses and carnival games. “Sandusky is an area where you can hop on the expressway and be downtown or near Randolph College,” says Don Marr, Realtor with John Stewart Walker, Inc. “It’s not an isolated neighborhood. It's convenient.” Locals take art classes at The Academy Center of the Arts in downtown Lynchburg, which also hosts plays, comedy shows and concerts. Another downtown activity is local ghost tours. “There’s a ghost tour in the fall that’s just fantastic,” says Marr. “I took a bunch of clients to it last year.” Residents who wish to attend religious services may visit Sandusky Baptist Church, Quaker Memorial Presbyterian, Fort Avenue Church of Christ or Thomas Road Baptist Church.

Single-family homes from $180,000

Homes with large yards line gridded streets. There are limited sidewalks, and homes are set far back from the street. Most homes have long pathways leading to a wide roadway. Homes are in the ranch, split-level and Cape Cod styles, with long driveways leading to carports or detached garages. “Sandusky has well-built homes with lots of character,” says Pettit. “They’re very well thought of, lots of intricate detail you don’t see as often.” Homes in the area range from $180,000 to $255,000. Homes closer to Sandusky Elementary School and Sandusky Middle School range from $260,000 to $365,000. “Sandusky is minutes from Liberty University and the University of Lynchburg,” says Pettit. “Many students end up staying after they finish at Liberty. They tend to bring their families to Lynchburg.”

Art program at Heritage High School

Sandusky is home to two local schools, Sandusky Elementary School and Sandusky Middle School. “All the neighborhood kids go there,” says Pettit. Both schools are part of the Lynchburg City Public Schools, which receives a B from Niche. Lynchburg's City Council recently considered shutting down Sandusky Elementary School and T.C. Miller Elementary School to cut costs, avoid upgrading older school buildings and mitigate declining enrollment. After opposition, though, the council opted to keep the school open for the rest of the year. Children may attend Sandusky Elementary School, which receives a B, and Sandusky Middle School, which receives a C-plus. Students advance to Heritage High School, which receives a B-minus and has an in-depth art program.

Flooding at Blackwater Creek

Blackwater Creek, which borders Sandusky, floods during heavy rainfall, but properties are usually unaffected. “Most homes are built on a massive hill, so flooding cannot reach the houses,” says Pettit.
