Historic events and homes
White Rock Hill, a small historic suburb near downtown Lynchburg, is known for its role in Black culture. The area is home to the city’s first Black cemetery, established in 1882 and used by churches for over 100 years. Hand-carved, heart-shaped headstones mark many graves here. Lynchburg also has strong ties to Black culture because abolitionist John Lynch founded the town. The town’s history is documented by the Lynchburg Museum, which highlights historic events and trends through visual displays and digital exhibits.

Vintage homes start at $40,000
One of seven hills in the Lynchburg area, White Rock Hill has a rough terrain, which made it challenging to build on, and it only became a part of Lynchburg in 1908. The Presbyterian military cemetery and White Rock Cemetery stretch between pockets of residential homes. Industrial buildings border the area, sandwiched between the James River and the freight train tracks. Any space is covered by thick greenery, and tree-lined streets boast occasional sidewalks with slanted, fenced-in lawns. “We’re called the tree city because we got so many trees,” says Debbie Aub, associate with RE/MAX 1st Olympic. Most homes were built around 1910 and are in the Foursquare and minimal traditional styles. “There are beautiful, older homes there,” says Aub. “When we bought there, it was a very affordable area. A lot of people and their families have owned their homes for years and years.” Modernized and updated homes sell for $125,000 to $215,000, while vintage homes sell for $40,000 to $70,000.

Percival’s Island Natural Area
Across from White Rock Hill is Percival’s Island Natural Area, with an access path near Route 29. Explorers follow the James River Heritage Trail to a bridge, where residents gaze upon the James and the rolling hills beyond. The bridge leads to the natural area, and locals traverse the trails while enjoying the native plants and animals that call the island home. “It’s paved, so it’s easy to walk on, and people walk their dogs and bike,” says Aub. “They take their kids and strollers. It’s a nice area.”

Shopping and dining in Downtown Lynchburg
Most residents dine on Main Street in Lynchburg’s Central Business District. “It’s very convenient to restaurants and shopping,” says Aub. “And the community market.” Waterstone Pizza serves hand-made wood-fired pizza in a modern wood tavern setting highlighted by brickwork. The Caddock Terry Hotel marks its history as an old shoemaking factory with a giant red high heel above the entrance. Within the old hotel is Shoemakers, an upscale surf and turf restaurant. Snacks and necessities can be purchased at White Rock Food Market and groceries are available at the Lynchburg Community Market and the Food Lion in Madison Heights.

Events celebrate Lynchburg history
Established in 1783, The Lynchburg Community Market is the country's third largest continuously running farmers market. Since no significant grocery stores exist in the Lynchburg Central Business District, residents purchase their goods at the community market. The market runs Tuesday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and has an Artisan Crafters Gallery and a Saturday market. “We shop there every Saturday,” says Aub. “In summer, we buy 90% of our veggies there and all of our meat there.” In June, Lynchburg celebrates its past as part of the tobacco manufacturing industry. The James River Batteau Festival celebrates the eight-day journey merchant boats, batteaux, used to take from Lynchburg to Richmond. Dancing, storytelling and singing travel to Richmond along the James as residents in kayaks, canoes and homemade batteaux camp in riverside towns and communities. Those looking to attend religious services may visit Jackson Street United Methodist Church, White Rock Baptist Church, Rescue Mission Non Denominated and others in the area.
