A residential area with city perks in reach
Right outside of Downtown Lynn and about 14 miles from Boston, Highlands offers a semi-coastal atmosphere with historic architecture. Mostly residential properties populate the streets, making the neighborhood a quiet haven just a stone’s throw away from Lynn’s restaurants and urban amenities. City lovers and nature enthusiasts coexist here, as Highlands’ central location also makes for easy access to the shore. “The city borders the water to the east,” says Art Durkin, are Realtor and president of the Art of the Sale group with Keller Williams. “There are all kinds of inlets along the North Shore. People can go to Lynn Beach or travel farther up the coast to New Hampshire to go surfing. Many people here work on the North Shore, and there’s easy access to the coast from the city.” Complete with nearby public schools and a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (T) station, Highlands yields access to both everyday needs and entertainment.

One of Highlands’ small outdoor areas, Cook Street Park, has a jungle gym with a zip line, swings and a roped climbing structure, adjacent to basketball hoops in a courtyard. The neighborhood’s steep incline provides both exercise and scenery, as the brick steps that lead to High Rock Tower rise to a height of 170 feet. This summit features unobstructed views of Boston, Nahant and Swampscott. At the top of the tower lies an observatory that houses a large telescope with lenses powerful enough to showcase the rings of Saturn, Jupiter and other marvels of the night sky. After getting a bird’s eye view of the coast, locals can head under 2 miles to feel the sand and water for themselves. As one of the first towns on the North Shore, the rocky beaches stay relatively busy year-round. To the north of the neighborhood is Lynn Woods Reservation, the second largest municipal park in the United States, with 2,200 acres. The reservation’s 30 miles of trails and three active reservoirs bestow a striking backdrop during hikes or dog walks. Exploration awaits at Dungeon Rock, a formation with an underground tunnel that has a history of pirate lore. In 1852, a man bought the land where the cave now sits in hopes of uncovering lost treasure, but despite his efforts, he never found it. Many visitors enter the cave’s iron doors in hopes of finishing what he started.

A wealth of restaurants and stores just down the road
Most eateries are downtown and point to the neighborhood’s rich Hispanic culture, with spots like Los Chamos’ Venezuelan Cuisine and Tacos Lupita. Café Colombia, located on Acorn Street, is a local Highlands favorite that serves authentic fare and Agave Spirits. Downtown offers other options like Rossetti Restaurant, a family-owned, candle-lit Italian spot off Sutton Street with high tables and an open kitchen. April’s Restaurant Pub & Grill sits just down the road, as well, and has served up American fare since 1999. Small Dominican and European grocery stores can be found downtown, as well as a Stop & Shop under 1 mile away on Washington Street. Target, Walmart, Market Basket and Square One Mall’s various retailers and food court are also within 5 miles.

Multi- and single-family options in 19th-century builds
Homebuyers can find multifamily Victorian-era properties and smaller single-family homes with vinyl siding and shingle roofs. A whole six-to-nine-bedroom property, typically used as an investment opportunity, can run between $600,000 and $1 million. Single-family homes often sell between $400,000 and $600,000. Highlands’ houses sit against sidewalks lined with mature trees, whose roots spill underneath the walkways. Due to the area’s popularity, Durkin says, “The inventory is very low, and it’s skewed in the seller’s favor.” It is important to note that the neighborhood’s CAP Index Crime Score is 7 out of 10, which remains higher than the national average of 4.
